Eliza Attar was born in Tehran, Iran to a chemist and a journalist.
tw start At the age of three, the family migrated to San Diego, CA as the Cultural Revolution made it difficult for her parents to find safety and work. tw end
Life in San Diego was as quiet and unassuming as could be expected for an immigrant family. Eliza was still young and quickly assimilated into her new community, deftly learning English, and acting as translator for her parents.
She was a quiet, mostly calm child, but there were moments when her temper would flare, hot and fast. For the most part, this was tempered by dance.
Eliza found herself when she was dancing. Ballet was everything she aimed to be -- graceful, structured -- and she was determined to push herself to becoming a principal dancer.
tw start That all came to a halt, though, when she found herself pregnant. Suddenly, all of her dreams of dancing for the NY Ballet seemed to be slipping through her fingers. So, Eliza did the only thing she could -- she had an abortion. The father of her child was never made aware of this and shortly after, Eliza broke up with him citing her career as the reason.
Her career never fully recovered, but for the most part, Eliza had a storied run. It was during her retirement year (5 years ago) that she met the man who would become her husband. They'd met on the evening of her final show, and while the sparks hadn't been immediate, he'd felt safe.
Now married for nearly 4 years, Eliza wonders if she'd perhaps jumped into a relationship because it was safe and she'd been emotional.
She runs a dance studio in town where she teaches a few classes each week that span the age groups.

It had only been two weeks since Eliza had moved to town. She’d laid eyes on the restaurant and had done the most spontaneous thing she’d ever done -- purchased it without a second thought. “I know it doesn’t look like much yet,” she called over her shoulder, “but in a few weeks, the construction will be finished. Then we’ll start prepping for opening night. I’m hoping to make it a big thing. This place and I both need a refresh.“
