24, 25, 26?

24. What was the best book you read?

I didn’t keep a list of the books I read this year, so… Hmmm. It might not have been the best, but Todd Moss’s The Golden Hour was definitely interesting and pretty enlightening for a novel. 

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I’m not very explorational with music, but since I really liked Charming Disaster’s “Ghost Story” when I heard it on WtNV, I’m going with that.

26. What did you want and get?

I wanted a new job, and I officially got one. Unfortunately, they never got around to actually letting me work, so… screw you, whoever fucked that up.

I wanted to get into grad school, and I did. (I went five for six). About to move to DC and start my course of study, so… fingers crossed that I don’t fuck that up.

I had to think about this, but there’s a Hillary who goes to my dad’s church. She’s legally (but not completely) blind, so she plays goalball and may or may not have almost made the US Paralympic team at some point. She periodically flies out to Colorado or wherever they’re holding some national goalball event, so I’m assuming she has.

23. Visiting what foreign city is highest on your bucket list?

You know, most of my bucket list locations are natural landmarks (Milford Sound, Glacier National Park, Uluru, Lençóis Maranhenses, etc, etc); cities aren’t super high on my bucket list.

But the highest city on my bucket list is probably London, maybe Paris, Prague on an outside chance, and then possibly Geneva because of mountains and/or CERN. If I were being a little less eurocentric, then the top city would probably be Beijing just because I’m a big fan of cities that aren’t tropical, and most of the non-European cities I can think of off the top of my head are in lower latitudes.

32. Please describe how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Spread butter and sprinkle sea salt over the outside of bread slices.

Spread Dijon mustard on inside of bread slices

Place three cheeses of your choice on the inside of one of the bread slices. I use provolone and two other Italian cheeses. Place thinly sliced onion and fresh spinach in sandwich between the cheeses.

Put sandwich together, and place in oven for 4 minutes. Flip and heat sandwich for another 3-4 minutes.

Broil the sandwich for a minute on each side.

Remove from oven, cut as desired, and enjoy.

Voilà!

5. What are you looking forward to in the next week?

A truly practical me would say that I’m looking forward to finding out when my job in St. Louis starts.

But actual me is looking forward to GW replying to my request to give me that freaking deferral so I can go to grad school next fall (instead of this coming fall, naturally) without having to reapply all over again.

11. Could you go for the rest of your life without drinking alcohol?

Probably, but there had better be a damn good reason why I’d do that. Like if I were trying to be healthy or something, maybe?

That’s pretty much a joke, though.

49. Have you ever been to New York?

Twice! Only the city, though. The first time was when my grandparents took me at the start of the summer between 6th and 7th grades. We did all the normal tourist stuff — a Broadway show, the Empire State Building, etc, etc — for whatever passed for normal less than a year after 9/11.

The second time was the senior IB field trip right after exams (except for me and a few other kids, but that’s another story). We did more tourist stuff — more Broadway shows, the Empire State Building again (where security took the laser pointer my late grandfather had given me =/), etc, etc — but with a lot more freedom to explore sans chaperones than I had in 6th grade.

I've booked my flights and I'm going to be in Washington D.C. from July 24 through July 28. I think I have plans for Friday night and maybe Saturday night, and I'm looking to visit the Walsh and/or Elliott schools on Friday in the morning, but other than that I'm not sure what I'm going to do (*coughfinallyvisitNPRcough*); does anyone think they'll be free some evening or another in that period to hang eat (cupcakes), drink (cider), and/or be merry?

I know I have a disproportionate number of followers in the area, so maybe?

(I'm also probably going to be in a hostel the first two nights, unless one of you can volunteer a couch? No worries if you can't, though.)

Were you able to have dinner with two people [living or dead] who would you ask, and what would you serve them/ where would you take them?

I’m going to interpret this as two distinct two-person dinners instead of a single three-person dinner because A) it’s not really clear, and B) I hate being outnumbered. It’s a lot easier to focus on the people if there’s only one of them at a time, anyway.

I’m going to stick with living people because I have no idea what dead people eat. Brains? I’m trying to stay vegetarian, so I’d have to pass.

Dinner A would be with Karen Gillan for… reasons. Tall, red-haired, and Scottish reasons. I’m going to pretend (for multiple reasons, some of which are completely unrelated to this) that I live in Washington D.C., and I’ve seen enough pictures from enough Facebook friends that I want to try Founding Farmers.

Dinner B would be with, um… okay, I should mention that I’m sort of terrible at these “have dinner with anybody ever” questions. The only other person I can think of is Rachel; I’m not sure why, but I’m certain part of it is related to my aforementioned desire to be in D.C. Probably the rest is related to the fact that we both like cupcakes and cider and vegetarian menus, which simplifies trying to find a mutually agreeable restaurant. Or I could cook, although my only real specialty is french fries. More importantly, we have enough in common that the dinner wouldn’t be horribly awkward… probably; I wouldn’t be surprised at all if my social gracelessness shone through when we met last summer.
