What seems monstrous may be inspired by divinity
What seems mechanical may be rampant with life
In Irish mythology, the Ellén Trechend is a three-headed monster said to have wreaked havoc on Ireland during the Battle of Mag Mucrama, until it was slain by the hero poet Amergin.
The etymology of the Ellén Trechend's name is unclear, with some interpreting it as a three-headed bird. This means it is often equated with the three-headed vulture said by P.W. Joyce to have led a host of golbins on Samhain.

**[The Ellen Trechend is Loose: three-headed demon of Samhain][ellen]** by [Andrew Constantine][]. Acrylic on canvas, 30" x 10". As part of his show *[Mythos: Gods, Demons, Fantastic Creatures][mythos]*. From the title card: > Throughout Ireland there are tales of monsters that appear at Samhain which must be killed by a hero. The worst of these was the three-headed Ellen Trechend, that, legend has it, emerged from the cave of Cruachan on Samhain leading a host of creatures intent on wreaking havoc upon the land. The Ellen Trechend terrorized the Irish countryside until the Battle of Mag Mucrima, where the demon was finally killed by the poet-warrior Amergin. I'm not sure if we should be struck more by the classic terror of a three-headed demon-beast or the hilarity of a "poet-warrior". Either way, this striking painting is personally one of my favorites from the show. I'm also a fan of the way [John Carleton][] photographed it.
