Tumblr
I chose to explore Tumblr because I have heard a lot about it, but have not used it myself. I used Tumblr for the first time while doing these assignments, and I wanted to learn more. Tumblr seems like a good platform to use to get in touch with a wide audience, especially younger people. I like that the site has options to filter by content type (pictures, text, gifs, etc...), and that related blogs are recommended to you based on your searches. I also like that you can curate your own page very specifically with things that you like. However, the main home page and search results pages are kind of chaotic. It can be difficult to narrow results down to specific topics. It seems like the site is better for browsing than searching for something in particular. I do think that this network could be beneficial to libraries. It would be a good way to keep in touch with younger people, and to advertise relevant library programs and resources. It also seems like a space where the library could have a little more fun with marketing. It is also a good resource for librarians looking for program and display ideas.

This Tumblr post about a virtual reality event at the library from Escondido Public Library in Southern California appealed to me mostly because of the graphics and images used. The is not boring to look at- the use of appropriate and exciting graphics, fonts, colors, and images really draw the eye and make it fun. It is a successful social media post because once the viewer is drawn in by the images, the information about how it relates to the library is very clearly and succinctly stated. It gets patrons excited about potentially using the virtual reality technology themselves. The post is intended for teens and adults, and I think that advertising the event via Tumblr was effective because most of the people who use Tumblr are within that age range. Other libraries could easily be inspired by this post. I do not believe that Tumblr is a popular social media outlet for most library systems, and it could be a good way to engage with certain populations (teens in particular). Because a lot of Tumblr is image based, it could be a chance for other library systems to have fun with graphics and pictures as they advertise resources and events.
