The sea. Deep, and blue, with waves rolling to the shore.
It was cool. The sun was high in the sky, peeking between the clouds and her feet were in the water. From where she stood, it looked like the water blended into the sky, a seamless connection at the horizon. Taking in a deep breath, her lungs filled with the air. It was brisk, salty. Fresh.

The sun was at it’s highest point of the day, scorching the earth below it. Most of the denizens of the Citadel had retreated into the cooler corridors of stone. One of said denizens was Ellit. She had found herself a quiet and cool place to work, having brought some of her duties down with her. A couple little pots, with cactus looking plants that she was moving together into a bigger tray. As she worked, she hummed a cheery little tune. She was always most at home when she played with dirt.
New Americana |-Ellit-
Ella chews on the inside of her cheek, eyes watching herstep sisters moving passed her quickly. Stasia was freaking out over the wayher skirt fit her hips, and Drizzle was upset because her halter top had a stain on it, which Ella was currently scrubbing to try and get the stain out for her. Both girls were stressed and excited for some party they were going to, and Ella wished she could get them to invite her, but she knew if she asked they would just tell step-mother, and then she wouldn’t even be able to sneak out like she planned to. She was helping them get ready, wanting to be as helpful as she could, and wishing that they’d hurry up so she could get ready to.
She hadn’t gotten to go out in the past few days. Her step-mother was working her like crazy, and she was doing all she could to keep up with her grades too, glad that they were on spring break now. She needed the time off from school, but she missed being able to talk to her friends there, and she missed the boys. She smiles to herself as she thinks about it, how boys paid so much attention to her at school, she figures its why the twins get so mad at her sometimes, cause boys always talk to her before they talk to them, but it’s not like she could help it.
Ella hands the halter top over to Drizzle when she snapped for it, Ella pulling her knees up to her chest and watching them silently, their voices loud and whiney, still freaking out over their outfits, still taking up precious time she needed to use to convince her step-mother she was going to bed, get ready for the party, then sneak out and get a cab to take her there. “You guys look so pretty,” Ella says sweetly, smiling as the girls turn away from their three way mirror to look at her, Ella setting her feet back on the ground, “Really, you looks great.” She says, and both girls scoff in unison, Ella frowning, and looking down when they start to tell her to stop being a ‘kiss-ass’ and that she still couldn’t go.
Ella waited patiently for her sisters to be finished, following them down the stairs to where their mother was closing up the bar early since they were all going out and she didn’t ‘trust’ Ella to run the place by herself. It only takes a few minutes, her step-mother saying goodbye to her children, telling them to be safe and Ella standing behind her some, watching closely before the step-mother turns to her, “You, bedroom, now.” She says, Ella nodding her head and turning on her heel, her step-mother walking her up to the attic, Ella walking in and standing by the door, wishing her step-mother a good night before the door was slammed shut in her face.
Ella runs over to her bedroom window, looking out of it and waiting until she saw her step-mother walking across the street to where her car was parked on the side, getting in and driving off quickly. Ella hurried to get ready, pulling the oversized shirt over her head, and shimmying out of her sweatpants, going to her wardrobe and rummaging through everything she had. She decided on a powder blue dress pulling it on and straightening it out, adjusting the straps that hung low on her shoulders before. walking over to her make shift vanity. All it was, was a shelf nailed into the wall, and an old wobbly stool from the bar. She glanced at herself, brushing her fingers through her hair and applying some lip gloss, and just a little bit of mascara and eyeliner, letting out a breath as she nods, and grabs the bright green flyer off the shelf before stopping by her mattress to slip her feet into the silver heels.
It two minutes for her to climb out of the window and make her way down the fire escape, four to walk down the street before being able to hail a cab, and then another thirty minutes to actually make it to the old warehouse the party was supposedly in. She used half of her money she earned that month to give to the driver, the other half tucked in her bra for safe keeping for a ride back, her walking down the alley as the flyer instructed, and seeing the two guys posted outside the door. Ella smiles sweetly at them when they notice her, and she holds up the flyer, one man taking it, and the other grabbing her wrist, marking her arm with a neon pink stamp, before opening the door, and she walked in, hearing the bass of the music pumping through the walls, and seeing the flashing lights as she made her way down the stairs, her eyes widening in awe at all the lights and colors that filled the room. She glances around, her smile never fading as she walks passed a few people, taking the clear cup handed to her by a girl painted beautifully, her looking at the cup and smiling as she brings it to her mouth, chugging it all down and holding it close to her chest as she walks forward, seeing where people were being painted, and biting her lip as she watched, wondering if it cost money.
