For the Not From The US ask meme, two questions about language:
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
And one more I think has great inter-EU drama potential:
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
Ellyn! Thank you for the questions! :D
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
Ah, yes, the kind of question that sets my brain to 'blank' when I try to answer it. There are. So Many.
Bombolone: noun, it's the name of a pastry, a variation of German krapfens. It's actually how people south of the river Po refer to the actual krapfen, in my (limited) experience. The word is rotund and fills your mouth as much as the food it describes, and I love it.
Inverecondo: adjective, meaning scandalous, offensive, shameless. It's a pretty formal word, it's hard to hear it in passing conversation, but it sounds. So Good. It's just the high of using sophisticated words to express disappointment and disgust, you know?
Stropicciare: verb, meaning to wrinkle, usually clothes. It just... sounds like you're taking a piece of cloth in hand and ball it haphazardly to give it as many wrinkles as possible.
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
I have two for you, one in Standard Italian and one in my region's dialect (Venetian language)
in Italian: Cazzo (literally, dick). This word has everything. The strong c at the start (it would sound like a k to an English speaker), the emphasis brought by the double z, it's like you're biting onto something when you say it. Also, it has (almost) the same versatility as fuck in English. You can fit it anywhere in the sentence. Magnificent, 10/10 would recommend.
in Venetian: Mona (literally, pussy). I love this swear word. It's the word for the vagina, but it's commonly used to refer to a person who is amazingly, monumentally stupid. Examples of its use as follows:
"Sito mona?" - Are you fucking stupid?
"Va' in mona" - go fuck yourself
"Va in mona a to mare" - go fuck your mother
"Ti te ghe da 'ndar in mona a to mare, e se 'a ze morta, SCAVA!" You should go fuck your mother, and if she's dead, START DIGGING.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
I'm afraid I'm not a good source for EU-based drama, because not only we're all Italians in my family, but we also all come from the same general area. Not even someone from another county. Shameful, really.
