thank you, weekend! thank you, friends!
Interesting release on Brownswood, Owiny Sigoma Band. Kenyan Luo style drums and groove meet members of Elmore Judd. Some tracks are intriguing and ethereal; others are neither fish nor fowl - not funky enough, not African enough, not anything enough. But interesting stuff
Blludd Relations & DEEK Recordings
Comprising Bullion's Nathan Jenkins and Jesse Hackett AKA Elmore Judd (also member of the Owiny Sigoma Band) Deek recordings' third offering is as verdant and far-out as you might expect from these prominent experimenters. The 10 track eponymously titled LP marries a variety of sounds and moods within a jazz inflected framework that clearly reflects their penchant for analogue exploration and a broad musical appreciation (as is especially evidenced in Bullion's far reaching selection on his New Jerusalem shows for NTS). From the (comparatively) straight forward freak pop of Even Steven and Bludd Manifesto to tracks like opener Up and Luxury that hint at the Luo via London stylings of Jesses' Brownswood escapades with OSB the pair've produced something with scope that engages the heart as much as it does the mind. For me the standout track is Playing For You, lush evening fare complete with sultry hooks and smooth guitar solo. You can buy it here for a fiver.
AUDIO: Blludd Relations - Even Steven
More gold coming from Bullion's already awesome DEEK Recordings, this time he gets a helping hand from Jesse Hackett of Elmore Judd on this off-kilter weirdo pop tune as Blludd Relations. Also, get a load of 'Blludd Manifesto' which dropped last month. Expect a full LP on DEEK later this year.
Elmore Judd & Bullion "Petrol Laughs" - synthpop reminiscent of early-to-mid-80s Bill Nelson or Talking Heads (though it reminds my wife of the more recent Zoot Woman).
Elmore Judd & Bullion - Petrol Laughs EP (Excerpts) By Honest Jon's Out soon.
