October is here again. Which means soon Wicked will be turing eleven.
May as well get this off my chest
Wicked is my favorite musical, it ha been for as long as I can remember, and it most likely always will be.
But whenver people ask me what my favorite musical, I always feel the need to say "Don't judge me, but.........it's Wicked".
Because over the years I've got a lot of judgement for loving that show so much.
Part of the reason I supose is because there are several people in the Wicked fando (as ther is in ANY fandom) who are jerks.
But the bigger reason I think is because "it's too mainstream".
I mean, I get it. There are A LOT of other great shows, and I know that. It has run over a decade, where other amazing shows didn't even get a year.
And yes, singing any of the songs from them at an audito is a VERY bad idea.
But here's the thing:
Nothing get the blood pumping in my veins like hearing those first few notes of "No One Mourns the Wicked". Nothing makes me want to take charge like "Defying Gravity". And no fictional character has had as much of an impact on me as Elphaba Thropp.
The show has been a constant for me throughout the years. It got me through some really tough times, and it was the story an the characters that got me to finally come out of my shell and be me wihout apology for the first time in my life. Not only that, the show has introduced me to some amazing friends who I've bonded with over the how, given me some mind-blowing nights at the theatre as well as many beautiful memories, and introduced me to some incredible perfomers.
And yes, maybe it is overrated, and maybe I am biased. But all I know that it is beautiful show with an incredibly empowering message.
So come October 30th, I will proudly wear my "Defying Gravity" shirt, my Wicked ballcap, and wish a "Happy Wicked Day" to everyon I run into.
Because no amount of hate I get for loving this show will override my deep love for it and what it has given me.
