Ooo, good ask! I honestly didn’t realize anyone read this fic other than Whiskey.

4.What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

Hmm, that’s real tough. I guess: “If it’s any consolation, he won’t know who you are. Your death won’t even faze him.” Said by our mystery woman. 

9.Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Okay, so I REALLY wanted a naked cuddling scene where Reyes tries to keep Els warm using his own body heat. But my beta said, “two people naked on this cold ass ground? Dead. And there’s no need for them to be naked.” So sadly, that went away. Other than that, this stayed pretty on point to the first draft as far as ideas. 

11.What do you like best about this fic?

A lot of Elspeth’s fics show her softer, sexier side. And if we know anything about the world, women portrayed in that way are generally viewed as weak. This fic was proof that Els is a certifiable badass. A woman who can do both, who can believe in goodness and people and love but still throw down some ass-kicking.

(condensed bc of ask character limit...) “Just thought I’d try.”  She chuckled to herself. “Brees always managed to trick Mom into giving hers up. And Dad would just tell us. He didn’t believe in wishes, only science , he’d say. But he went along with it because he knew Mom loved it.” She sighed. “This was her favorite part, watching the smoke go into the clouds.” She missed them, he realized. And with that information, he knew what she wrote on her paper. I wish Brees would wake up.

Ooo, thank you for askng! For anyone interested, the fic is A Christmas Wish, set in Bad Puns & Finger Guns. 

So the whole idea of writing wishes and burning them on paper actually came from a friend of mine. We wrote our resolutions and burned them in a goblet (it felt more official that way) and since then, I’ve equated wish burning to just being or at least feeling like a very legitimate wish activity. 

And when you make wishes, someone always tries to figure out what those wishes are. Elspeth’s brother has always been written as a pestering kind of character, so he would be the one to bug everyone about theirs. And I headcanon Els’ version of Ellen Ryder to be a sweet, somewhat magical woman who believes in silly, simple things like wish burning. But she doesn’t do it for the wishes themselves, more for just the memory, so of course she wouldn’t hold it back from her son too hard. As for Alec, he very much loved his wife, and seeing that joy on her face, even if he didn’t believe in the reasoning behind it, I can see him just enjoying the memory itself.

As for Els’ wish, I think I originally had her wishing for everyone’s happiness and Reyes catching a glance of the paper before it burned. But no, why wouldn’t she want her twin to wake up from his coma? A moment of selfishness on her first holiday without her family, I think she’s earned that much, don’t you think? :)
