They both do, I think. Though they themselves have never personally experienced it.

I think they feel for each other about the same time, it just took Ellie a little longer to figure it out. Then she spent a good couple months fighting it.

Jesse, because he’s a sap.
Who’s behind the wheel more often during road trips?
Jesse. Ellie’s unused to driving and she doesn't technically have her license.
Who sets up the tent and who gathers firewood during a camping trip?
Jesse gets the firewood, and they both help set up the tent. And probably have a sword fight with the tent poles.
Who hooks bait during a fishing trip? Who catches more fish?
Jesse actually really enjoys fishing, and definitely catches dinner for the two of them. Ellie would rather swim. When he does coax her to sit down and fish with him, he has to bait the hooks because Ellie finds earthworms kind of gross and won’t touch them.
Who insists on learning how to ballroom dance?
Ellie actually knows how to ballroom dance. She teaches Jesse.
Who goes all out on the other’s birthday?
Jesse. Like I said, he’s a sap.
Who sings louder while cooking? While showering?
They both sing. Jesse mostly sings to Ellie (sometimes in public) and Ellie just sings in general. Jesse is definitely louder, but Ellie sings more often. She sings when she’s happy, she sings when she’s sad, she sings while cooking and showering and doing chores.

They both tease each other. A lot.

Neither of them believe in that crap.
Who drags the other to fortune tellers at fairs?
Neither. But Ellie drags Jesse on all the rides and Jesse finds the biggest stuffed animal at the fair and wins it for Ellie.

Jesse would carry Ellie because she smol and he finds any excuse to pick her up.
