This might be the last one for tonight. Another one of Emberra, this time with a sort of shocked or amazed face.
Got the Tablecloth today for selling my Art at Conventions and Events! So excited!
Hi @emberra! To answer this question, you need to know a few things along the lines of the following:
What are you displaying? What are you displaying on the vertical display, and what are you displaying on the table? Are you just having a banner run across the top of the display, or are you planning on having a cascading wall/waterfall of prints all taped together hanging down like a curtain? Also, are you sharing the table with anyone else, and will they want to have the overhang over their part of the table? Are you planning on using the display for different sized tables (e.g., half tables) in the future?
How tall are you? When you sit down at your table, is anything going to hit your head or will your stuff block people from seeing you?
How tall is the table? For the same reasons above. You probably won't know until you get to the event. You can make a best guess based on tables you have access to.
Does the event have specific rules around height? Some conventions ban displays above a specific height for reasons including safety and obstruction of other parts of the event, so check to make sure before you build something that's going to be taken down.
The best advice we can give is to take a look at some photos of other overhang displays to see what appeals to you the most/makes the most sense with your situation. (See our displays tag.) Definitely do a test set up in advance, approximating as best you can the height of the table.
A few things to note:
The taller something is, the harder it will be to see when people are very close to your table - they’ll really be straining to see the highest prints. But if they’re far away, it could make your table more noticeable - assuming, of course, that everyone else isn’t also going at it with super high displays. In the case of the latter, and especially if the artist alley space is not that big and not optimal for long-distance browsing, it can make your table harder to distinguish.
Regarding the display width, if the clamps/bars/sides of the display are right at or super close to the sides of your table, depending on the actual artist alley configuration this could make them more susceptible to people (e.g., table neighbours, convention traffic, yourself as you try to get around) smacking into them.
If anyone has any additional tips, experiences and suggestions, please share :D
