Big ol' fan for many years, but I was wondering after seeing your cute Star Wars setup with Rey and Kylo dukingitout, what your thoughts were on the sequel trilogy? It's all been so weird lately in that corner of the internet and given your pretty impeccable taste, I would love hear thoughts!
At first I thought you were referring to my gif of Kylo Ren and Rey duking it out, then I realized you meant my little figures of them, heh. (I was going to alternate between having them fight and having them wrapped around each other in an epic make-out session, just to mess with people, but I could never find the time to keep changing their poses. And also their arms probably don’t bend that way and they wouldn’t balance; I have to tape their feet down just so they stand upright.)
Anyway, onto the sequel trilogy… ah, the sequel trilogy / Disney-canon in general. I’m probably going to smother all your hopes and dreams right now when I say that the sequel trilogy actually killed my interest in Star Wars. More specifically, The Rise of Skywalker killed my interest. More more specifically, I had never been so pissed as when I left the theater after watching TROS. I was angry. Those Rey and Kylo Ren figures? I bought them right after I got out of the theater, because I was so angry I bought them in a fit of spite so that I could use them to pose my own, BETTER ending -
Where was I going with this? Oh right, back to the sequel trilogy. I should say though, that the whole thing is also sad because I started off really liking the sequel trilogy. I’ll admit right now that I am a Legends girl at heart, and that is my canon for the characters. But that didn’t mean I hated the sequel trilogy; I actually really enjoyed The Force Awakens and Rogue One, and really loved the new characters that came with them - Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Kylo Ren, I love all of them, I only wanted happy things for them.
But oh man, as it went on… I hated The Last Jedi when it first came out (though it’s grown on me, I actually enjoy a lot of it now), Solo just bored me, so The Rise of Skywalker was kind of the nail in the coffin, in that it sort of wrecked everything I had liked about the previous two movies, and also several of the movies before them. I mean, my favorite character is Darth Vader, so you can imagine how absolutely delighted I was to hear that Palpatine was back, meaning Vader sacrificed his life for nothing. And now he’s related to Rey? Great, way to totally overturn “Rey Nobody”, a development I actually liked! Turns out heroes can’t come from nowhere, it’s all about bloodline! (And apparently, shooting lightning from your hands is GENETIC.) Or Rose, a Star Wars character who looked like me! With her own deeply intertwined arc with Finn that allowed both of them to fully develop into heroes! Oh wait, she only gets 70 seconds of screen time. Everybody’s celebrating at the end? Guess what, that’s exactly what they were doing at the end of Return of the Jedi, so what’s the guarantee you won’t tear up that happy ending just to make more movies? And you messed up Kylo Ren’s entire redemption arc and made it a clone of Darth Vader’s do you know how MAD I AM ABOUT -
Okay. I am okay now. Sorry, the digital release came out and I was skipping through it, thinking, “I enjoyed The Last Jedi much more after rewatching it, maybe that’ll happen here”, but NOPE, it just made me angry all over again, and I never found a place to put my initial anger so yeah, I just threw it all over this post. But now you know that I have some very angry opinions that I’ll spew given the opportunity. And now that I am on unexpected break from work for the next month, I am going to immerse myself back into Star Wars Legends world to see if I can’t rekindle my love for it.
