& so the group activity begins!

Like I said in the previous post, I was a part of the second group, so of course, I asked the people in the first one what happened. To be honest, I definitely suggest you ask as well while they wait to see who is moving onto the next part.

Oh yeah, after group activities, there’s a 5-10 minute gap while the recruiter picks who moves on to the next part.

ANYWAY !!!

Before I really begin though, just remember that even though there might not be people from Emirates watching, you still need to act like there are. Cool? Cool.

PICTURE ACTIVITY

So this group activity is a picture activity. You sit in a circle in numerical order & the people to your right & left are your partners. Basically, there are many groups of three.

For my AD, we were given a task:

The cards we were handed out lists a career on it. Name THREE things this person needs to succeed in the career & why.

Next card is an object. Name something that the person with that job can do with the object.

For example, my group was given PAINTER & COFFEE BEANS.

What does a painter have to have to be successful in his career?

What can a painter do with coffee beans?

& yeah! That’s really it. You have about 5-10 minutes to decide. As you talk about it with your teammates, the recruiter walks around & observes you as you interact with people.

Remember this is about WORKING AS A TEAM. Be attentive to your teammates & listen to their suggestions. Agree with them and disagree with them. Just make sure you listen to them & that you speak eloquently when you present your ideas. Be supportive of each other. In that moment, these people are your future colleagues & you need to show the recruiter that you are able to work with anyone.

After about 10 minutes, the recruiter will call everyone to attention & ask that each group stand up & present their ideas. Pretty sure that we were actually the second or third group to present, but while you are waiting to present, MAKE SURE TO BE ATTENTIVE & SUPPORTIVE OF THE OTHER GROUPS.

Even though the recruiter is paying attention to what the people in the other groups are saying, ACT AS IF SHE’S WATCHING YOU !!

When it was our turn, we stood up & we each said one thing a painter had to have to be successful. But before we did, we said good morning to both the group as a whole & the recruiter. While presenting the idea, I made sure to make eye contact with everyone. It’s a bit nerve wrecking, but hopefully you feel comfortable enough with enough people that you can stand there without shaky legs or a voice that’s breaking from nerves.

Anyway !!! Whoops

Be clear when you speak, & also be concise. You need to be able to elaborate on why you think the person needs these to succeed in their career, but not to a point where you are rambling.

& also, when other people are speaking, make sure to smile at them & support them, especially if they seem nervous.

Now, after we presented the ideas, the recruiter picked one of us to say what idea we had for what a painter could do with coffee beans. I was not picked, but even if you aren’t picked, make sure that you are there for them. Remember that this is about teamwork. Every member of the group should be informed about the ideas and be ready to speak & say the idea.

Once your group is finished, you make sure to listen to the other people. Smile at them & just plain be supportive. Smile until your cheeks hurt !!!

Once every group is finished, the recruiter will collect the cards & tell you to return after 5-10 minutes where she’ll post who got in to the next part on the door.

The wait is UNBEARABLE. I remember almost crying because I was so nervous, but lo & behold!!! There was my name & I may have screamed a little & hugged people who got in with me. The people who did not, I also hugged because I am that person & wished them luck.

With that, the recruiter called the people in from the first group to do the next group activity which was the reach test & the role play. She told our group to return after forty five minutes, so we left while the others continued on.

Journey to a Dream - First AD Experience Part One

Once again, I will remind people reading this post that I have gone through the whole interview/application experience with Emirates, but I failed to get the job after the FI. I am making another attempt soon which is partially the reason why I created this blog & I’m writing these things out. What better way to prepare & hopefully calm my nerves than to write out what happened last time? However, it has been almost a year since the interview. I will try to be as specific as possible, but there might be gaps in specifics so if you need more than this, I suggest asking me because maybe I remembered something or looking at the blogs I listed in the research post.

Last time, I went to Boston, MA for the AD. I would have gone to the NYC one since I live here, but I found out about it AFTER I already booked my bus ticket & hotel to Boston. Not a huge loss, I actually quite like Boston.

I didn’t stay at the hotel the interview was in because the Westin was pricey as hell. We ended up staying in the DoubleTree right by Tufts Medical Center. We took Megabus there since it was far cheaper than flying or taking the train. Definitely recommend it if you have a chance to take it. Anyway! We got there the day before, so we had time to find a place to eat & to rest. & also buy makeup at CVS because I forgot my eyeshadows whoOoPs.

Please make sure that you have everything packed before you go.

The interview starts at 9 am. It’s imbedded in me to always show up early to anything and everything, & because our hotel was in the downtown area & the interview was by the convention center, I went to sleep early because I needed to wake up early. But before I went to sleep, I made sure that I had everything I needed for the AD. Pretty sure I woke up at like ... 5 am the next day so I could start getting ready.

Thank God for the fact that the hotel had a Starbucks & that it was open early because breakfast is so important! Seriously, do not skip breakfast. Even if your stomach is twisting & turning, don’t skip breakfast! I can tell you that my stomach was definitely twisting & turning.

Now, if you’re like me & it takes you a while to put makeup on & to get ready in general, please allow yourself the time to get ready in the morning. Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your AD/OD. If you have to commute, skip applying the lipstick until you get to the hotel so you can do it in the bathroom. Show up on time. It won’t matter that you look impeccable if you show up late.

With this in mind, after breakfast, I finished getting ready. I actually had already showered & blow dried my hair so all I needed to do was put my clothes on & my makeup. That day, I wore a black dress & a red cardigan with tan heels. My makeup included, of course, the signature red lips. Truth be told, I didn’t put my hair up for this (at least, not at first). I had it down when I went to the Westin because I have super thick hair & little patience to deal with it’s nonsense.

Now, getting to the Westin was honestly not hard. I’ve been to Boston before & I live in NYC so any city with a public transportation system is easy for me to deal with.

My advice? If you have never been to the city before & you are NOT staying in the hotel the AD is in, PLEASE, the day before, go explore. Figure out how to get there via public transportation.

I honestly cannot stress how important it is to know how to get to places before the interview happens. I know that smartphones exist & so does Uber/Lyft, but if you are planning to take public transportation, do yourself a favor & learn how to get there beforehand. DO NOT BE LATE!!!

I get to the Westin about thirty minutes before 9. I was in Toms & needed to reapply my lipstick, so before I went in, I went to the restroom & got my shit together. Always, if you see a restroom, use it & take the opportunity to look at yourself in the mirror to make sure you are good! Also! If there is a cafe/Starbucks at the hotel, do yourself a favor & buy water if you don’t have any with you. The Westin didn’t provide us with water, so it’s good to have it to prevent dry mouth.

After that, I went into the room with this other candidate who I sat next to & I stuck up a conversation with her! She actually had a bit of red lipstick on her teeth so always make sure to do the tissue trick/finger trick to get rid of excess lipstick after application. But yay! Made a new friend & we ended up sending the rest of the time talking to the people around us while we waited.

I don’t know if the thing about Emirates always watching is true, but make sure to smile & be friendly & open to those around you, even though you aren’t in the same room as the recruiter. For me, it actually helped to talk to people around me.

The recruiter actually showed up a little late, but you know, don’t let the time freak you out or anything. She introduced herself very briefly & then said a little joke before she started setting up.

(Okay so it starts to get a little iffy here & I may have mixed things up a little, but bear with me)

While she was setting up, the recruiter handed out slips that basically asked for our names & whether or not we have gone to a FI with Emirates before & when that interview was. Although the recruiter can’t check right then & there about whether or not you had the interview & when it was, don’t lie. If it’s been five months since your FI, write it down.

Anyway!

After someone came in to help her set the projector up, she called us up to drop off our CVs. Although it wasn’t an OD, she did allow people who did NOT apply online to stay & drop off their CVs so she could look through them.

I’m not sure if this happens all the time, I’m sure it depends on the amount of people there. However, even if an event is listed as AD, it COULD become an OD just so they could eliminate people before the actual AD parts.

When you drop off your CV, MAKE SURE TO SMILE. Again, say “Good morning!”. Be courteous. Answer the recruiter’s questions in a calm manner & smile while you’re doing it. (Try to make it natural). The questions she asks depends on your situation. For me, she asked briefly about my education & work history (as my work history is lacking). I tried to give her a concise explanation before she said thank you & moved on.

Depending on how many people there are, either everyone gets into the AD part of the day OR the recruiter does an elimination.

But since there weren’t that many people, we were all allowed into the next part which was the introduction!

Which I will get to in the next part to make it easier for everyone reading this. I hope this is sort of opening your eyes (because wow is it helping me remember stuff), but I’ll be back with the next part of the AD soon!

Journey to a Dream - Persistence After Rejection

I want to point out again that I have gone through the AD & FI with Emirates last June in 2015. I did not make it which is why I am trying again this year. Believe me when I say that it’s disheartening when you find out that after everything, you did not get the GC & will not go to Dubai. Truth be told, I honestly spent a few days huddled under my blanket because I was that dejected by the rejection.

But it’s not the end of the world!!

For a few days, it might feel like it is, but there’s always another chance! Here is a copy of the rejection email that I received :

“Should you still be interested in pursuing your interest with us, you can re-apply after a period of six months from the date of your final interview.”

That sentence is like a GOLDEN LIGHT. Just imagine a spotlight on this sentence with sparkles all over it because that’s how I saw it. I have another chance. You will too if you fail to make it after the FI. I hope you make it through, but to be realistic, you need to prepare yourself for the worst. Nothing in life is guaranteed.

If you truly want this job, try again in six months. They say on the website you need to wait a year, but if it says six months from your FI date in your rejection email, reapply in six months.

Yes, they do ask for when you went to a FI in your OD/AD, so make sure it’s been at least six months (or just about to be six months) since your FI. Of course, you need to remember that again, nothing is guaranteed. Just because you made it to a FI the first time, doesn’t mean you will again. However, remain confident. Show that you are determined to get this job. Don’t let stress or nerves screw you over.

I hope I don’t sound like one of those inspiration blogs, but look, positivity gets you a long way. Yes, it’s okay to be nervous especially if you want this job, but you gotta keep positive. Is it going to hurt if you get rejected? Yes, of course. However, if you focus so much on the bad, then it will show in your body language and in your face.

Smile. Breathe. Talk to people around you. Make new friends. Say “good morning” to the recruiter when it’s your turn to drop off your CV. Smile at them & speak in a clear & easy manner to mask any nerves you’ll have. It’ll be hard, but remember to breathe.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that when I get nervous, it shows.

The best thing you can do is release the tension during breaks so that when you are in front of the recruiter, you’ll at least be somewhat okay. It sort of worked for me. People honestly thought I was about to faint during our breaks, but while I was at the group activities, I looked okay. So it’s really a matter of finding a way to release the tension when you can. Ramble to the people around you. Find a way to mentally prepare yourself for the activities as well as the FI. If it means rambling and bouncing around in your heels, do it.

When you stand in front of the recruiter & members of the group during group activities, speak up & make sure you are clear when you speak. Work with each other! This is all about TEAMWORK & being able to work with different people to solve problems.

& if it doesn’t work you, try again! If you truly want this job with Emirates, persistence will be your best friend.

Journey to a Dream - Essentials for the Application

Hello hello! It’s time to talk about the application itself. I’ll talk about the things you need to bring in for not only the ODs/ADs, but also the FI. I don’t know how it was for others, but for me the first time around, I only had a day between the AD & my FI. You do have a week to send these things in after your FI, but it’s a good idea to have these things ready just in case.

Preparing is your best weapon. When you have an idea of what to expect, then at least you can just worry about the good things.

Before we get into those things, here are the documents you need to bring for the OD/AD:

Copy of the invite letter (if applicable)

Updated CV (no cover letter)

A photograph (can be formal or casual, but remember this is how they will remember you by so make sure to pick a good photo)

& here are the documents you need to bring for the FI:

Complete online Psychometrics Test (this will be given to you before the FI & must be completed before FI. I don’t remember what the computer requirements are for this, but if you have a laptop and you’re going to another city for the interview, bring the laptop.) ***MANDATORY FOR THE FINAL INTERVIEW***

Pre-joining form (again, given to you before the FI) ***MANDATORY FOR THE FINAL INTERVIEW***

Two (2) colored copies of your passport. ***MANDATORY FOR THE FINAL INTERVIEW***

Photocopy of your highest education certificate

An updated CV

One (1) full length formal photo (you need to be in business attire. I’ll post the requirements for this photo below)

One (1) full length casual photo (again, requirements will be posted below)

One (1) half body casual photo

Eight (8) passport size photos (again, requirements for this will be posted below)

Again, you have seven (7) days to submit these (except for the first three which are mandatory for FI), but it’s better if you have everything squared away beforehand.

Create your resume/CV.

This shouldn’t be too long (1-2 pages) as it should be concise so that the recruiters can look through it and make notes of all the important things. If you don’t know how to create a CV, here are a few websites to help you:

Google

Concise is the key, but make sure this is complete. If you have gaps in work or education, they will ask you. If you haven’t worked in a long time, make sure to have an explanation ready. You don’t have to include it in the resume but they will ask during FI. Make sure to include everything you have done that is work related, whether it’s actual work or volunteering. You should also include education and any certificates you may have. Again, be concise, but also remember that this is one of the first things they see from you. Make sure you shine.

Apply online !!!

You’ve made your resume, awesome! Now apply online. If you make it into FI, you need to create an application anyway so you might as well make one. Even if you do not get the invite to the AD, from what I understand, you can still apply via the OD. Make your life easier and just apply online.

When you apply online, you will be asked the typical application questions, (like education + work) if you have your CV made, just upload it so you don’t have to type it out again. There might be some errors in the text box because they import the information, so make sure to review the application and correct any errors.

They will ask for two photos! One full length and one passport size. You don’t need to make the full length a professional photo. I used photos from my vacation in Paris. As long as it’s a head to toe shot, you’re good. Next, your passport size photo. You need passport size photos anyway for the FI, so I suggest getting these done and just uploading the photo.

Photographs.

You need photos of yourself in general. First for the application online and then for the OD/ADs itself. Remember these photos can be anything as long as they are conservative (you shouldn’t have a drink in your hand). Here’s an example of the photo I sent in the first & second time around.

However, for the FI, there are guidelines for the photos you need to bring which are:

One (1) full length formal photo (you need to be in business attire. I’ll post the requirements for this photo below)

One (1) full length casual photo (again, requirements will be posted below)

One (1) half body casual photo

Eight (8) passport size photos (again, requirements for this will be posted below)

I cannot stress this enough, but they are VERY strict about the photos. If a part of your toe is cut off, they will reject the photo and ask for another. They are also very specific about the casual photos. Last time I went, I tried to give them this photo:

However, because I had sunglasses on the top of my head, the recruiter deemed it unacceptable. I also tried to give these photos:

But these were also unacceptable.

However don’t stress! You can actually bring in several casual photos for the recruiter to pick from. I suggest bringing in at least 5-6 for them to pick from.

As for the formal/business attire photos, you don’t need to hire a professional photographer for these. However, since you do need to get passport photos, you may as well ask for a full length shot as well in your business attire. Make sure that you follow these guidelines as again, they can reject the photos that don’t.

Again, you have 7 days to send these documents in to the email they’ll provide when they give you the document checklist & guidelines (which also gives you a starter pack list provided to cabin crew on arrival in Dubai which is here). But! Make your life easier & have everything prepared beforehand. This way, after the FI, you don’t have to worry about sending extra things in & only have to worry about the wait. Plus, by not having everything, you actually increase the wait time to hear back from HR. Believe me when I say that the wait is bad enough. Make it easier for yourself & your heart.

Remember that sending positive vibes out into the world helps a lot. Nothing is guaranteed in this endeavor, but when you think positively, good things happen.

Journey to a Dream - Importance of Research & A Little Wake Up Call (Maybe)

There is nothing more important than research. Whether you are writing a book or looking for a job, research is a must.

You’ve decided to take a journey. You’ve decided that you want a job because hey, the job has it’s perks! You get to travel & see the world. You have a chance to go to places you would otherwise never get the chance to. You get to meet new people, experience new cultures. You get to live in a new (or not) country where East meets West.

& hey! Tax free salary? The fact that they pay for your apartment & the utilities? The travel benefits? Health & dental insurance? Free transport to the airport & HQ? Discounts within Dubai? Layover allowances? & other benefits that I can’t remember that this time.

But of course, while there are perks, there are also things you need to know & should know before you move on with the application. I am not trying to scare you. I didn’t make this blog to scare you or discourage you. However, I want you to remember that you need to jump into this with eyes wide open. You should go into this knowing what you are getting into.

Be prepared. Don’t mind me as I insert the perfect song. Not really. But I couldn’t help myself.

When you get the job, your life is going to change. You will be moving to a foreign country. Unless you meet people via Facebook groups or other means before your DOJ, you won’t know anyone. You will be moving in with people you don’t know. You will almost certainly miss your loved ones.

Loneliness is going to be your companion. As will fatigue.

Remember that you are not there to fool around. For the first few weeks, you will be at training. Your days and nights will be dedicated to studying & preparing. They touch on this in the Emirates recruitment video that they show during ADs, but this just skims the surface. That red binder they give will be your life. It will be just like school again except that if you screw up too many times, you could be sent home.

Do not underestimate this job. It’s not easy. Even if you already think it’s hard, multiply it by a thousand because everyday, something new will happen that may make you want to cry and scream. This isn’t me exaggerating. While I have never been crew, I have read things, talked to people, & seen how passengers sometimes act towards cabin crew on their flights.

Don’t go into this job blinded by the glamour. I have no doubts there’s glamour & the perks are amazing as well. But there’s always a catch with things. Be in formed. Google is your friend. Again, this is not to discourage you from applying. Far from it! I want you to be informed. I want you to be able to go to those ADs & to Dubai at least somewhat prepared for what’s to come. The information I discovered has not scared me away from the job. Of course, reading it is different from actually experiencing it, but I feel that by being informed, you are better prepared for whatever future you have with the company.
