Bloody sly Bishop with all her beautiful lies!

Kay looked down on the journal engraved with her name.

Pollie too… I don’t need any of them! 

From the inside of his vest he had ripped out the necklace as well. A moment of hesitation was followed by the violent tossing of the gifts into a trash bin. 

…

How did it come to this? Lies from the two people she could let herself trust?

He shouldn't have been surprised when it turned out that Bishop was as every bit treacherous as Pollie had said. But Pollie as well? Did Kay end up in a snake's den?

Rage soon melted into bitter melancholy; with a shout, Kate collapsed onto the floor in tears. 

Who could she trust now? She no longer had one of her best friends, and she no longer had a mentor to seek for guidance. It would be a cold day in hell before he could trust Mihir.

How he would have loved to go to Alan and bemoan to him about what had happened. Perhaps he would have held him in a loving embrace and told him it would be okay and that he would yell at Pollie for him. But there was no need to get him involved in such dangerous matters. Besides, he didn’t have time to spare anymore for the two of them. Their quarrels should have been the least of his concerns when he had 8 mouths to feed daily. 

Get up Kate… get up-! She’s not worth it… She’s not worth it..

So why are you crying? Why did you give her the letter? You wanted to trust her, right?

No! No-! I-

Why did he do it then?

It’s not trust… I don’t care about her! I don’t-

The more he tried to deny it the more her image premated her mind. Gloved hands attempted to paw the tears at his cheeks, but they gushed forth all the same.

He should have expected Bishop’s betrayal, but there was nothing that could have protected his heart from the stake of Pollie’s. 

Doctor Jekyll was the only one who trusted me… And I ran away-! I ran away like a bloody coward… Dear God.

He was a fool to think Bishop could have ever replaced him. All her fanciful words were a vapid attempt at caging him to her. He bared his entire soul to her and she did in turn. She exposed every single weakness of her own as if holding the fruit of knowledge above him, and still he never bit.

And even still despite it all, Kay dragged himself back to the trash bin to pull out the tainted gifts.

I’ll make her pay… I’ll make them both pay!

Like you could ever get Pollie to pay.

I’ll make her… I’ll make her regret everything-!

As soon as he could think of a plan. As of now he was furiously scribbling away in the journal, half his own feelings and half a strategy. 

You won’t bloody get away with this!

Hyde and Seek my beloved

Word vomiting rq here. But it's genuinely so well written. I can't critique it properly bc of the way the story is formatted between snippets of the board bc I am tiny brain. But from what I took in, it was good.

Emma Bishop as an antagonist especially, she's sympathetic, they tie parallels towards her and Pollie with their cgs with the funerals. Which was something Kate could sympathize with, she already sympathizes for Pollie.

Emma always compliments Kay from the heart. But those compliments are also manipulation. Because while yes they are genuine, they are also used to confuse Kate into doing what she wants. "Emma let's me question her authority, she compliments me, surely she's on my side right?"

My one criticism would be how Jekyll was handled in this game, he seemed really rude for no reason? I guess the explanation would be the duality seperation was taking a toll on him and his egos were meshing.

But this was contrasted against Emma. Jekyll always told Kate to listen to him, to never explore and stay within the safe boundaries of science. Emma actively encouraged Kay to speak out against her, to get lost in science. That is what drew Kate to her. She reminded him of Father Micheal.

But Emma is still, an awful person. She's the antagonist for a reason, Kay has to go against her. The tactics she used on Kate have probably been used on Mihir. "I should've put that bastard in Oxford." If this a compliment to his intellect, she was directly hanging that over him, to push him to dispose of Kate.

He could've had the life he wanted for himself. I suspect his trauma came from the caste system because one of his QNA things related to how he "acted as if he was a brahmin (priests and academics)" when he was a lower caste. He might have been lured over by his father to come because of his love for literature and the arts. But his father is a major asshat who cheated on his wife with Emma iirc or something along those lines + dismissive of him son's passions. Whatever they did to him, fuck them fr.

Emma used the unsafe CHC made by Kay for commercial use. Her own damn maid was driven insane by it. That's how much she doesn't give a damn about the consequences of her actions. You see throughout with the drug addicts on the board. And if that doesn't make you sympathize with them, Alan in the later chapters should.

This is a man desperate for anything to keep his family afloat. And then he says shit like "DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO WANT YOUR FAMILY DEAD?" This drug renders people unable to be themselves or to recognize their loved ones. And it is actively preying on peoples vulnerability in the situation. Be it for work or because they have nothing else. Emma was preying on their vulnerabilities just like she preys on Kate and Mihirs.

I think that could be said for all drug dealers and with Emma it shows her true colors. With all her saccharine but meaningful words, there's also her bitter will to do anything it takes for profits. It may be understandable considering her backstory, but it is not justified.

I don't know how much I can say on this matter, I am desi, but the colonialistic implications of Bishop Trading. Just as Britain had forced opium down China's throats like all else, CHC may be similar. Mihir stated how getting the plant for it is dangerous/dirty work but Bishop doesn't care. The white abuse of power over pocs. I don't mean this in a political way, it's just a footnote i thought of. Feel free to yell at me abt this.

Emma, can I make you a braid?

"A braid? As in my hair?" Emma inquired not unlike a mother to her child.

"You may, but do be careful! I've gotten quite old..." She lowered her head to indicate her permission. Although it was an unneeded gesture as she was already sitting down.

Ms. Bishop, what did you see in Arnab? Don't you think he was just using the money YOU made?

"I can certainly see why you ask that." Emma responded matter-of-factly.

"However... it's not a stable situation in his homeland right now. He had chosen me over his family, and it is up to me to make sure that sacrifice is worthwhile." In a way though, it didn't seem like she spoke of Arnab as a lover, rather a cohort.

"We all have to do what it takes to live in this world. Consume what we must. And sometimes we put our heart on the same plate as well."

Ms. Bishop, I find it very hard to believe that you truly can be that ruthless. You act so kind and lead with a strong yet soft hand. I am sure your workers are very happy.

"Do you suppose so? I do try to keep my workers content, lest they get any.... ideas."

Bishop gave a small laugh. It was an amusing idea to her, being a kind ruler.

Perhaps they should say that to the people her men had smashed with hammers.

"Have you never heard 'stay away from the Queen of the Alleyway'? While your company is most welcome, I wonder if you would have thought otherwise if you recieved a warning."

"Thank you for the kind words, but remember, people may not be what they seem."
