EDITORIAL ARCHIVE ON THROWBACK THURSDAY - ITALIAN VOGUE SEPT 95
PHOTO:JUERGEN TELLER, STYLIST: VENETIA SCOTT, MODELS: GUINEVERE VAN SEENUS AND EMMA BLOCKSAGE
Todays editorial archive is a favourite old shoot I worked on with the great Juergen Teller in 1995.
This shoot is the tale of 2 models who we shot together but they ended up following 2 completely different career paths!
First off is the gorgeous Guinevere Van Seenus. With her creamy complexion and bow-shaped mouth Guinevere who was born in a Boston suburb , and raised in Washington, D.C., by Dutch parents, her family relocated to Santa Barbara, California at the age of 15. She joined a regional modeling school, and what started out as an unserious pastime swiftly transitioned into a passion. She left the Pacific coast to pursue modeling full time in Paris.
Her unconventional look was beginning to be sort after by many especially fashion photographer Paulo Roversi who Guinevere pretty much almost became a muse for, had it not been for Craig McDean and Juergen also wanting her for various shoots that soon lead onto her Steven Meisel/ Italian Vogue debut.
The other model in this shoot is Emma Blocksage ( The blonde). Emma had just burst onto the modelling scene when these pics were taken, unlike Guinervere who had already started to establish herself in the fashion world a year previous. Phototgraphers and fashion people alike were loving Emma's look, including Corinne Day, Sean Ellis and David Sims, Chanel, Prada, Dior and Vivienne Westwood, but Emma had other plans. She wanted to be a glamour model and just didn't really get the fashion world. She found the pictures that people wanted to take of her, weird, strange and unsexy. She thought it was much cooler to be a "tits and arse" model !
And so the story goes that after only a few more high fashion editiorials and advertising campaigns, which included a Joop campaign that I shot with her with Sean Ellis, Emma decided to disconnect herself from the fashion industry and head towards the glamour world. She got a lingerie contract with Debenhams for 2 years, with her calendar hitting the top 5 best selling calendars of 2003. She dated Boy band, East 17 member Brian Harvey and became a media celebrity, shooting for FHM, Maxim, Nuts and The Sun newspaper.
Next to Guinevere, the juxtaposition of the two of them together Juergen found fascinating and weirdly it kind of worked, although if you haven't noticed, Guinevere ended up being featured a lot more than Emma in the final edit for the magazine.
Guinevere has now established herself as one of the most iconic models to have come out of the 90's whilst Emma established herself as an iconic British glamour model who went onto present TV shows and get a recording contract with Warner Bros and a UK top 20 hit single.
And so this shoot is really about when 2 worlds collided then rapidly drifted apart.............
