가짜 약의 두 얼굴 가짜 약을 먹고도 오로지 진짜 약이라는 믿음만으로 약효가 나타나는 것을 플라시보 효과placebo effect라고 한다. 라틴어로 “내가 기뻐할 것이다I shall please.”라는 말에서 유래한 플라시보라는 단어에는, 의학이 발달하지 않았던 과거에 가짜 약으로나마 아픈 이들의 고통을 덜어주려고 했던 의사들의 진심 어린 노력이 담겨 있다. 그런데 이게 먼 옛날의 이야기만은 아니다. 오늘날 의료 현장에서도 통증을 호소하는 환자들이 마약성 진통제를 달라고 조를 때 중독을 막는다는 선의의 차원에서 생리식염수를 진통제라고 투여하는 경우가 왕왕 있다고 한다. 그러면 그저 소금물에 불과한 생리식염수를 진통제라고 믿고 맞은 환자들 가운데 상당수는 진통제 덕분에 통증이 사라졌다며 만족한다고 한다. 나는 솔직히 잘 모르겠다. 이게 과연 옳은 방법인지 아닌지. 마약성 진통제의 남용을 막으면서도 환자의 통증을 줄여주었으니 일거양득의 현명한 선택일까. 아니면 환자를 속인 행동이기 때문에 부도덕한 행동일까. 당신은 어떻게 생각하는가.
