The press called them the Mercury 13. Each was an experienced pilot with hundreds or thousands of hours of flight time. Each passed the entire battery of physical and psychological tests given the original Mercury Seven male astronauts. Program was killed before they could attend flight training in Pensacola.
Margo and Emma talk about Sergei (any season or au)
It had been two weeks when Emma decided that Miss Madison needed to talk to someone. She had watched as she ate less and every morning she saw the deep bruises under her eyes from sleepless nights. Everyone assumed it was because of moving the Mars launch two years. And it was that, but not all.
On Friday night, after she fed her family, Emma stopped at a convenience store at picked up a six pack of Shiner and returned to JSC. She knew Miss Madison liked to drink fancier alcohol but this conversation needed mediocre beer and Emma needed to be able to drive home after it.
She knocked on the door. Miss Madison was behind her desk, with the lamps on and a record playing low. “Emma! I thought you went home.”
“I did,” she replied as set the bottles on her desk. “But, Miss Madison, you need to talk to someone, and it looks like it’ll be me.”
“Talk about what?” Emma could see Miss Madison curl into herself, close herself off.
“I was next to you when the new Director of Roscosmos held a press conference on Mars.” Emma twisted off the bottle top and took a drink. “I know you’re worried about Dr. Nikulov.”
Margo took a bottle, opened it and took a long swig. “I am. I haven’t been able to contact him at all. And Roscosmos won’t tell me what happened to him.”
“I know that you two are friends.” Emma thought that they were considerably closer than that. She made it a priority to block off Miss Madison’s schedule for the IAC years in advance. She had observed how happy she would get before and after the conference. She noticed that the number of albums Miss Madison ordered went up the closer to the conference it got. She would ask Emma’s opinions about outfits she packed. And she had heard the slight gasp and the brief worry that flashed across her face the first press conference without Dr. Nikulov.
Miss Madison nodded. “I feel like I might be the only person on Earth that is worried about what happened to him.” She swallowed hard.
“Did something happen in London?” Emma remembered how upset Miss Madison was when she first arrived at JSC after the IAC.
Miss Madison looked down. “He was under a lot of pressure. He - wasn’t himself.”
Emma wished there was something that she could offer Miss Madison. But the Soviet Union was a law unto itself and when people disappeared, it wasn’t good.
They quietly drank the rest their bottles. There was a sheen on Miss Madison’s eyes when she quietly said, “I wish I knew if he is alive.”
Over the course of this job, Emma had made contacts throughout the country and world to make Miss Madison’s job easier behind the scenes. But she had no contacts in the Soviet Union, had no way that Miss Madison herself didn’t have to check in on Dr. Nikulov. So she offered the only thing she could. “If you ever want to talk about your search, I would be willing to listen.”
Miss Madison nodded. “Thank you, Emma.”
The two sat in silence once again, each thinking about the horrors the Soviet Union could inflict on its citizens.
“Next time, though, at least bring something better to drink,” Miss Madison said with a slight smile.
Thanks for the tag @sparkleplatypuswriter 💛 and thank you for this little sneak peak at the next chapter of #brazilverse… I think it goes without saying but I love it there!
I’ve been playing with some FAM ideas for a while, especially Margo’s relationships with the other people in her life, like Emma! Here’s a little of something I’ve been working on (even though Wednesday was the other day). I don’t know if it will ever fully see the light of day, but it’s fun to mess around. It’s saved as “wrapdress” in my WIP folder

With a heavy sigh, Margo's arms dropped to her sides.
Glancing between Margo and the equally offended hangers swaying on the rod, Emma's curiosity finally broke. "Is there something specific you're looking for?"
"I thought I had..." Margo's voice trailed off, looking at her clothes as if they had betrayed her. "Somethin's come up."
Emma's brow creased as confusion clouded her features—a question suspended on her lips.
Margo's discomfort was evident; her posture had gone rigid as she shifted uneasily. "I, uh…" her chin twitched with hesitation. "I'm meeting Sergei Nikulov later tonight."
Emma's eyes widened, flickering with intrigue.
"Not." Margo held up her hand, needing to waylay the assumptions that were surely gaining momentum in Emma's mind. "Not for…" she sighed and defensively crossed her arms over her chest. "He and I need to have an honest conversation about this docking problem." Her eyes moved back to her clothes, hanging in her closet and continued, "Without his damn babysitter."
Their eyes met, and the corner of Emma's mouth twitched into her cheek in a commiserative smirk. "So you've invited him..." The question was left unfinished, as Margo answered with a subtle nod, "Yep."
Emma raised an eyebrow. She knew about Club 11:59 from almost the beginning. Having heard that Margo played the piano, she brought it up one day as she made small talk, trying to get to know the woman who had asked for her specifically to be the assistant to the Director of JSC.
Margo stepped away from the shelf they were filling with technical manuals and design specs. "Did Molly tell you that?"
Emma's brow furrowed; it was well known that there was tension between Margo and Molly, but she wondered why Margo would jump to that conclusion. "No," she answered honestly, looking over to Margo. Their conversation had been light and superficial, if not one-sided, as Emma had been doing most of the talking. "Uhm," she faltered in response to Margo's tense expression, knowing the truth could (probably would) be worse. "It was just something I heard," and then added, "a long time ago," for clarification.
Margo turned, putting one hand on her desk and the other on her hip. Her eyes narrowed. "Who?" Weary suspicion laced her tone.
Emma's lips rolled under her teeth, shifting her weight uncomfortably as her eyes darted to the floor.
"I do...play piano," Margo's voice surprised her, and she looked back up in time to see the tension easing from Margo's face. "I'm classically trained, but I prefer," she faltered, lifting her hand to her ear, "I play jazz."
They both inhaled. A mixture of relief and self-consciousness filled the space between them. "It was..." Emma cleared her throat, preparing herself for Margo's reaction. "It was Dr. VonBron who told me."
Margo recoiled, her back straightening, clearly surprised.
Wringing her hands, Emma continued, her words tripping out of her mouth. "I wouldn't have... I mean, I should have realized before I asked...it's private, obviously," she shrugged. "He told me, but I won't...." she hesitated again. "The only way for me to do this job well is if you trust me."
Margo's nod was subtle—accepting.
"I would never," Emma added softly.
A hint of something flickered across Margo's face as she turned toward the bookshelf. Emma watched her take a fortifying breath before going back to arranging books in a way that made sense to her. Her hand hovered over the box on Margo's desk, waiting until finally she reached in and plucked out another binder, which she placed next to the others on the shelf. They worked together in silence until the shelves were nearly full—until Margo's voice eased into the quiet. "I play at a jazz club sometimes. At night." They looked at one another. "It's something I do, for me...to clear my head."
Emma smiled.
"Your dry-cleaning won't be ready until the end of the week," she offered as an explanation for the absence of whatever Margo was looking for.
"Damnit," Margo muttered with an air of exasperation.
I'd pay good money to see Emma and Sergei interact. And another scene where Margo walks in on them laughing like they're lifelong friends and feels relief, suspicion, and a horrible bone deep jealousy. All of which she covers up. All of which Emma and Sergei see clearly.
