Two ships passing in the night. Each docked at the same harbor, going in and out each day, but never quite meeting, and never quite the same. Between Emmeline and Althea, one just might know every secret in the entirety of Hogwarts.
“Nott? I mean honestly, Nott?”
Althea tapped her fork against her plate without responding to Smith’s question. It was still a puzzlement to her that Theodore Nott had asked her to the Yule Ball. She wouldn’t be surprised if it all turned out to be some grand plan from the Slytherins. And yet, there was still something inexplicable that drew her to him. It was just as much of a puzzlement that she had said yes.
“Knock it off, Zach,” said Megan, rolling her eyes. “My family knows the Notts and...well, they’re just as bad as anyone, but Theodore’s by far the most tolerable.”
“You could certainly do worse,” agreed Emmeline.
"Maybe Malfoy would be worse, but still...”
Smith shot a sidelong glance at Susan, who was determinedly ignoring him. Emmeline paused in the middle of buttering her roll and glowered at him.
“Actually, I meant you.”
Smith sank down moodily in his seat as the others snickered. However, the laughter petered out almost immediately.
Harry Potter was shuffling down the aisle between the house tables, looking even more awkward than usual. He came to a halt behind Emmeline, who had become thoroughly immersed in cutting her turkey into minuscule bits. Harry cleared his throat and lifted a hand to wave at them all.
“Hey, guys,” he offered lamely. “Um, Emmeline...can I have a word?”
Emmeline pursed her lips, staring determinedly down at her plate. She looked prepared to wait him out until Sally-Anne elbowed her in the ribs – hard, by the looks of it. Finally, she sighed.
“Yeah. Alright.”
She dragged herself up from the table and followed Harry out of the Great Hall. The moment they’d disappeared into the entrance hall, every single one of the Hufflepuffs leaned their heads together.
“Told you,” Ernie said, banging a fist down. “I told you! He’s asking her to the ball right now. Pay up, Susan.”
“No way. Not until we know for sure.” Despite the conviction of her statement, she was staring at the empty doorway with an expression of outrage. “I thought for sure she’d go with Neville. Anyway, isn’t Harry supposed to like Cho Chang?”
“Cho’s going with Cedric,” Althea reminded them, in a voice more glum than she would’ve liked to hear from herself. “Harry was always going to end up going with Emmeline. A bit daft to take that bet.”
“I think you and Ron Weasley are the only ones in the whole school who have to pay up,” Justin said with a laugh. “Well, and his brother Fred. Word is the twins had a second pool about whether or not Em’s going to find out we’re all betting.”
Althea grinned. “Of course she knows. She’s a Hufflepuff.”
a subclass of nymph, dryads are deities of the forest. their spirits often inhabit trees and are known to be extremely shy, except to a select few who have proven themselves friends to both nymphs and nature.
First of all, an author who updates consistently with amazing writing every chapter? Actually completing a fic? literally every reader’s wet dream. I have no idea how you do it, and I’m jealous of your diligence.
Ummm hello? Rare hufflepuff oc? HELL YES! Emmeline Marsh is ADORABLE! I love how she’s shy, but not a pushover the balance is great! Her realationship with Hermione gives me warm fuzzy feelings (we won’t even mention Harry, when I found this blog and found out they end up together I thought I would explode lol).
I can’t wait for book two, but please enjoy your much needed break lmao. Until then I’ll be sating myself with re-reads and your other works ;)))
Okay, I guess I’ve dragon-hoarded this awesome message for long enough. I was keeping it in my ask box to make me smile every time I opened it. 💕🥰
I am so happy to hear that you loved Provenance. It’s a story that’s been a long time coming, and I’m really glad that it’s finally finished and published and out there in the world in its entirety. I have a lot of work to do before the second installment, and other stories I must attend to, but I promise that Emmeline’s story is plotted in full and will be on the way. I can say that Chamber of Secrets will show Emmeline growing more into herself, gaining confidence, getting tangled in the trio’s shenanigans, and well and truly becoming friends with Ron.
Thank you so much for this message. It really warmed my heart every time I opened tumblr, haha.
You could always gauge how difficult a transfiguration lesson was going to be by how much of the notes Professor McGonagall had already written on the board at the start of class. It was easy to leave Herbology homework until the last possible second, because Professor Sprout often chatted with students as she collected their papers. It could easily take her twenty minutes to make her rounds, leaving plenty of time to scribble down some last minute answers on a worksheet. And if you ever forgot to revise, you could always do it during History of Magic.
Okay ummmm you know i gotta come in with a 💞+ Emmeline right??? Sorry it’s just mandatory 🤷🏻♀️
I know, and I love you for it. Well and truly. ❤︎
1. Hermione Granger: Obvious. I have had a blast writing Emmeline and Hermione. They are so, so different, but at the same time, they are both scared little girls who cling to each other for friendship. In SS, they’re both uncertain and trying to figure out how friendship works. I’m really excited to develop them over the years. In everything I have plotted, they only fight once. They’re just relentlessly supportive and understanding of each other.
2. Neville Longbottom: Neville is Emmeline’s very first friend, and they share so much with each other. They both struggle to be brave, and come from pretty much the same tragic past. There’s a lot that goes unspoken between them, because they both just know. But Emmeline is always in Neville’s corner when he doubts himself, and Neville can find it in him to be brave if Emmeline needs him. They babies. ❤︎
3. Harry Potter: Okay, I know Harry’s only in a quarter of the story I wrote based on the book about his life, but still. I love how kind this boy is. And despite Emmeline’s hero-worship, she also tries so hard to treat him like a normal person, which doesn’t go unnoticed. Like Neville, she and Harry both have the unique experience of growing up an orphan because of Voldemort, and that’s something that pulls them to each other over and over as the series goes on. Their futures have always been tangled together.
4. Severus Snape: This is not a positive relationship, at all. I’m no Snape apologist. But I’m putting it on this list because it’s fundamental and tbqh, I love writing Snape being an asshole. Snape’s mistreatment of Emmeline is one of the things that drives her character development, because she sees the way he treats people, and suddenly finds the fire inside of her to say, “That is wrong, you are wrong, and I will not stand by and let this happen.”
5. Sirius Black: God, okay I can’t talk about this one too much because I haven’t gotten to it yet and there’s a lot I haven’t posted about. Suffice to say that Emmeline becomes really close with Sirius, and he dotes on her. I added a lot of original scenes into the plot of books 3-5 because I love thinking about them so much.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! here's a a bunch from your very own nye ask game: 😢+ 👍 andddd two prompts (you can choose one or both or none it's completely up you my dude): 🎉+ 😴
HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIEND!!! TYSM and ILY and much thanks for being my friend in these trying times.
Apologize to one OC you hurt this year. You know what you did.
Look. Okay? LOOK. I know what you’re asking for. And it’s the truth, because I didn’t do a lot of different stories this year, I didn’t get to hurt a lot of people. Emmeline is still young, so her time will come. Kat’s time will come a lot sooner, but I’m not quite there yet.
So Leela - I’m sorry. I am, truly. For giving you two bad parents who treated you terribly, for giving you extreme depression, depriving you of friends, making you a homeless teen with four jobs, and making you fall in love with a boy who can’t see past the end of his guitar. And then killing all of you. It’s not a good time. But I love you, and I’ve dyed my hair purple too just to show how much!
Which OC would be handling quarantine the best?
Are you kidding me? Emmeline! She’s spent her entire childhood living in the country, going back and forth between her home and the lake, coloring, doing puzzles, and flying around the yard. The girl has never gone anywhere in her life, and it would not be difficult for her to return to the norm. 😂
🥀 How would your OC decorate a notebook or journal? What kind of things are written in there? Could you give an example of a nice entry?
Most of Emmeline’s thoughts go in her letters to Aunt Vee, but I can imagine that as more starts happening at Hogwarts that she can’t share with her godmother. She writes mostly half sentences about what she did each day, what she thinks may be happening that year, her feelings and fights with her friends. Some of it has to be in code too, in case any of her housemates were to stumble upon an entry. (Can’t be writing about Sirius Black by name, now can we?)
But mostly, she uses it to doodle with her color changing ink. Dogs and dragons and mermaids and evil eyes and wands. Sometimes instead of entires she’ll just scratch out a picture of what she’s feeling. It’s easier to draw her problems and fears instead of putting them into concrete words.
💦 If you as the writer could erase one traumatic event from this OC’s life what would it be and why?
Oh, naturally it would be the death of Emmeline’s parents. I would be nice for her to grow up the way Gareth and Lynette intended - Gareth teaching her to fly in the backyard, taking holidays so they could fly in the mountains and bringing back gifts from his trips and missions. Lynette might’ve owned a menagerie or opened some kind of magical zoo. Their house has all kinds of pets, Muggle and magical, and when it comes time for Emmeline to go to Hogwarts, Lynette asks Gareth to write to McGonagall for special permission for Emmeline to bring her ermine to school instead of a rat.
This is a little spoiler-y, but also not, because it’s in Emmeline’s introduction gifset. But if Gareth and Lynette hadn’t died, they probably would have fought for custody of Harry. I’m not sure if Dumbledore would have let them though. If not, you can bet your ass that Gareth and Lynette would not so subtly have packed up their things and moved to Little Whinging. They wouldn’t say anything, not without Dumbledore’s say-so, but they would’ve kept an eye on Harry and invited him over for tea and made sure he was well looked after one way or another.
Does Emmeline recognize Hermione's feelings for Ron or does Hermione tell her? I've started wondering if Emmeline would try to play matchmaker or not or if she notices the change in their relationship.
I love this question so much because Emmeline recognizes precisely nothing about any of the relationships around her. She and Ginny both tease Hermione a little in Order of the Phoenix, but then Ginny asks Emmeline how long it’ll take Ron and Hermione to get together and Emmeline’s like “...wait, what?”
Come book six, Emmeline will be rooting for them, because at that point it’s apparent to everyone that they’re just waiting. But Emmeline needs to be told that Hermione and Ron like each other, because she will not notice it on her own.
