Okay one more for the night! Sugar we’re going down!
NEW MATERIAL — @pre_occupations The industrial production was the first thing I noticed about this new record. The second thing was how sometimes Flegel’s voice could remind me of Cedric Bixlar-Zavalas singing in his lower register and in the style of At the Drive-In rather than The Mars Volta. There’s also a strong Joy Division vibe that remains a constant on NEW MATERIAL. The messages behind the lyrics reveal themes about a foreboding future, accepting failure, and humanity’s ruin. Structurally, some of the riffs and refrains can get quite repetitive. Nonetheless it is still a positive progression from their first album. _____ 7.7 #musicreview #indieplaylist #emoplaylist #industrial #postpunk #musicrecommendation #indierock #albumreview #Preoccupations #NEWMATERIAL #altrock #emo #alternative #indiemusic #albumrelease #record #musicblog #musicnews #musiccritic #artislife #music #supportindiemusic #goodmusic #indieartist #JoyDivision #AttheDriveIn
WE CAN LIVE HERE FOREVER — @barelycivil This album concerned me at first. The opener was good, but track two played like the typical whiny pop punk single. However, “Eau Claire? Oh, Claire.” Gets things back on the right track. The singer is definitely more in his element singing gently over a building momentum of instrumentals. The lyrics in this track in particular caught my attention; the song ends with a haunting phrase that echoes the rest of the day in your head, “So pour the champagne/Pour the champagne/Pour the champagne/I’ve lost my head in Eau Claire”. The middle of the album is really when they hit their stride sonically, emotionally, and lyrically. The screamed vocals on “RE: Your Lungs” perfectly contrast the softer melody. There were some areas where I thought the production was somewhat muddled and took away from the song but most of the time the soft melodies and mellow instrumentals were able to pull me back in. The second half starts with another more traditional pop punk style song; this worried me, as I feel the positives for the vocals are soft melodies—with or without emotionally charged screams. Luckily, he avoided the nasally tone that so through me off earlier in the record. The guitar work in “Stark” is another highlight that blended perfectly with the overall mellow post punk and emo tone of the album. The last two songs once again continue that building of momentum from the middle of the album to send this one out on a memorable note. “I Am Drowning” in particular is a beautiful acoustic song with the singer singer softly over the notes he travels through. It actually reminds me a lot of the “Play Crack the Sky” in the way that it is filled with emotion and beautifully caps off the album. I can honestly say—once I had finished my standard three times listening to the record—that this is an album I will come back to for my end of the year list. It’s a long year, but this was another great release. 8.8/10 #musicreview #indieplaylist #emoplaylist #musicrecommendation #indierock #albumreview #BarelyCivil #emo #poppunk #postpunk #alternative #indiemusic #albumrelease #record #musicblog #indiepop #musicnews #musiccritic #artislife
WAIT FOR LOVE — @pianosband This album marks a decisive step in the progression of pbtt as a band. They’ve completely moved on from their hardcore days and are more focused on creating music that matches their truest elements. When you listen to this album in comparison to their early work it’s like listening to two completely different bands from different influences. 8.2 of 10 #musicreview #indieplaylist #emo #musicrecommendation #emoplaylist #pianosbecometheteeth #waitforlove #albumreview
NEARSIGHTED is the new album from @speaklowmusic with vibes reminiscent of Copeland. Key highlights are “Ever Yours”, “Safety Net”, and the closer “Swell”. Part of my theory on great albums is that you MUST have a good closer, and NEARSIGHTED delivers on that front. Overall, 6.0 of 10. The major issue is the lyrical content. It gets a little, well actually way too predictable. I fully understand and see the merit behind the desire to write about heartbreak, and that it’s a universal theme. Some of the best albums of all time have focused on various themes of heartbreak. However, the lyrical depth just is not present on NEARSIGHTED. The content is so repetitive that I found myself completely disengaging from the lyrics. For all struggling poets look to current events, literature (read thought provoking novels), even try googling for writing topics. BUT there are good things to take away from this album: the vocals are crisp and soothing, the instrumentals are lush, and just check out that amazing artwork! Speak Low nailed it with their choice of artwork because—despite my personal opinions on the music—I find myself drawn to it visually. #musicrecommendation #indieplaylist #speaklow #emo #emoplaylist #musicreview #albumreview #musiccritic
@tinymovingparts — SWELL All I can do is endlessly quote this album. Such an excellent album. “Mile mark 53 I feel empty. Mile mark 53. I feel empty. Brain.cells.swell. May your brain cells swell! May your brain cells swell with LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!” RIYL: the lyricism and emotion of @toucheamore the catchiness of @manoverboardnj with the guitar work of PMTODAY #tinymovingparts #swell #punk #poppunk #emo #posthardcore #indieplaylist #emoplaylist #musicrecommendation HIGHLY RECOMMEND 9.1 of 10
