Emotion and Knowledge
But when I zoom in on the circumstances surrounding the death of John the Baptist, I become emotionally upset. Was his death really the outcome of someone's birthday wish? (Mark 6:19-29) I think, "It is an extremely unfair, annoying situation," and harbour unpleasant thoughts towards Herod's new wife and step-daughter.
It was always God's plan to die on the cross. God sent His only begotten Son so that believers can have everlasting life (John 3:16). And part of John the Baptist's calling (or the mantle upon his life) involves him 'going before Him' (v.17 of Luke 1: 13-17). So if Jesus was going to die, fairly young (at 33 yrs) without having children and before earthly marriage then it's no surprise that John the Baptist died, fairly young, with no children and before having been married, and also that he did so before Jesus did. It was part of John's purpose in life; part of what he was sent to earth to accomplish. John's death may have been a signal to Jesus as well; a signal that said, "Be weary. Your time is coming soon." When I think of the purpose behind John's life and the philosophy and the theology, it's fine and it all makes sense.
