MAMMMMMERRREEEEEEEE
The fact that they’ve probably forgotten me but I’ll always remember what they did (clueless)
Ficlet: Emotions (Namaari)
Everyone assumes that Namaari has little time for emotions, preferring to lead her people with pragmatism and a composure that is difficult to break. Even from a young age, she is reserved and fairly serious, embodying the very definition of a strong Princess of Fang. The people are proud of her dedication to their land, and her sense of duty to protecting them all.
She grows into a warrior, commanding soldiers with loyalty and, if needed, fear when someone dares to push back against her orders too strongly. Despite this, she is neither foolhardy nor arrogant, willing to take council from those around her, and quick to praise those who display the same sense of pragmatism and duty to Fang.
She does not seem physically affectionate to any around her, excepting her own mother, and any mention of ‘love’ or romance has her eyes narrowing into a glare. This is only right, the people think, for she is first and foremost a warrior and leader for Fang in this dangerous new world. Time for love can come later.
Raya however has long enjoyed finding ways to get Namaari to drop her poise and stoicism, pushing her buttons until the anger seeps out around the mask and it breaks. But now they are friends, and the more time she spends with Namaari, the more she sees the depths of other emotions also. She sees how Namaari’s eyes still sparkle with joy and awe whenever she sees dragons dancing through the skies; if one stops to talk to them, the disbelief on her face is so obvious to Raya that it would be comical, if it weren’t so sweet.
She sees also how children tend to congregate around Namaari, clutching onto her legs without a care that she is royalty.
‘Tell us about the Mighty Sisudatu again!’ they will cry, demanding some story, and if Namaari has no pressing work to carry out, she will pause whatever she is doing to huddle down with them. Every character in her tale has a different voice, and Raya’s favourite scene she ever accidentally stumbled across involves a pack of tiny children swarming Namaari, who is re-enacting some dramatic moment of death – of who or what, Raya is unsure of to this day.
‘It was an educational teaching,’ Namaari tells her later, her cheeks flushed bright pink.
‘Sure it was, dep la,’ Raya smirks, the moment already assigned to her memory forever. Two weeks later, she saves another favourite memory to mind when she visits Fang on business and finds Namaari curled up and napping on the back of her serlot. She almost leaves her to continue sleeping, loathe to disturb such a picturesque scene, but it would be even worse to miss spending time with Namaari on one of her visits, so she gently shakes her shoulder.
‘Sleeping on the job?’ she calls out at the same time, and can’t help but giggle when Namaari tries to bury her face into the fur instead of waking, muttering a grumpy yet arguably affectionate binturi.
Namaari detests appearing weak in front of people, Raya soon realizes, and that concept of vulnerability can cover a great many things – from being too affectionate, to losing a fight, or even showing too many emotions.
They are travelling together through Spine towards Tail for a political council, when they decide to camp overnight rather than stay in a nearby village.
‘It’s lovely weather,’ Raya makes the point. ‘And weirdly, I miss sleeping under the stars sometimes.’
Namaari hadn’t argued, settling down on her sleeping mat on the forest floor with the ease of someone who is also used to camping outside on longer travels.
In the middle of the night however, Raya finds herself awake, her instincts as honed as ever despite not living by herself anymore. It takes a minute to realize what exactly has disturbed her sleep.
There is a soft noise of crying coming from where Namaari lies, her face turned away and only her back showing.
‘Are you alright?’ Raya whispers through the dark, and sees Namaari’s shoulders still suddenly.
‘Fine,’ comes the quiet response, and then a pause. ‘Just a nightmare.’
Raya thinks for a moment, and then comes to a quick decision, moving her mat so it is next to Namaari’s and then lying down again. Her arm goes around Namaari’s waist, dragging her closer until they are spooning. She can feel the tension radiating through the other woman’s body, and then they both take a deep sigh and relax.
No words are spoken as they both drift back to sleep.
--- “do you know WHY i brought you here? i mean... why i chose this place specifically?” of course, it would have been too easy of an answer to claim that he’d only brought mi-nyeo here because it was VALENTINE’S DAY. deok-su shifted where he sat on the blanket that they shared at the top of a steep set of hills-and-trails. where they currently sat, they were overlooking a vast SEA OF FOREST: up ahead, trees looked like ants, and the blue sky seemed endless. “i brought you here because this location REMINDS ME OF YOU.” deok-su gave a soft, romantic smile, as he squeezed his pregnant partner’s hand and gazed ahead of him again. “whenever i come to this place, i feel at PEACE, which is the same feeling that YOU have given to me, ever since we were first together.” no one else had been able to surface such feelings of CALM in jang deok-su before han mi-nyeo did. “all that i have, all that i am, I OWE TO YOU.” the man’s eyes were watering during this rare moment of his vulnerability. “i am a better man because of you. i am a husband and father because of you. YOU ARE ALL, in my eyes.” if he didn’t have han mi-nyeo, then he didn’t have a damn thing that was worth fighting for, he was certain.
