Components involved in Human Centered Design and how you can leverage the process to develop marketable products that provide a lasting impa
Visual Diary 3:
In considering furniture design - something that humans use every day on a typical basis - there's been thoughtful design recently for those who are left handed and struggle in educational settings and beyond. There are chairs now where that desk surface is flexible, meeting a need beyond design for those humans using them.
Wicked Design Problem #2
Overpopulation on our small little planet needs to be considered more often than it is. We have finite resources that we are blowing through. Although for the first time, at least in America, the younger generations are choosing to have way fewer kids and hopefully this trend will help with the issue of overpopulation.
The other way this affects all of us is when it comes to urban expansion. Overpopulation means more houses needed and more infrastructure, which slowly destroys our natural world. The more people there are are, the more homes and roads and food we need, but demand is far outreaching supply at this point, which also raises prices and makes simple living rather difficult for those of us that are already living here.
Can micro-cities transform urban living with sustainable principles, high-density dynamism and mixed-use functions?
Visual Diary 2:
When reviewing wicked design problems, and what it encapsulates - i.e. being a concept that may require ongoing adaptability, doesn't have a rational or almost black and white solution, and comes onto the scene as a transformed process each and every time - I thought about the concept of city living that many architects want to introduce to the US. The idea that the US developed the way it did, where you're living in an urban, suburban, or rural area, is interesting in general but doesn't necessarily provide opportunities for sustainable practices. The wicked design problem of micro cities "...represent a holistic approach to architectural innovation, where high-density living harmoniously coexists with a rich tapestry of mixed-use functionalities. These self-contained ecosystems not only redefine convenience in urban living but also embody a commitment to sustainability, fostering a dynamic, healthy and interconnected way of life within the bustling urban fabric."
Module 1 – Example of Design Leadership
My next example of Design Leadership is the Product User Personas Repository that I am currently working with my team and business partners to create. Not to say that a user personas repository is particularly notable or unique in the UX design industry at-large, but it does present new, user-centric, Empathetic Design method in which our “Connected Aviation” business operates.
The Problem:
Being a UX Designer, I observed many instances of disconnect and lack of a shared domain understanding that results in missed opportunities. For instance…
Misinformed understanding of job roles and inconsistent nomenclature between products, even when they were serving the same user personas, leading to solving the wrong problems
Lack of awareness of product functions and use cases resulting in duplicity in development efforts, which slows development progress
Fragmented business strategy despite clear opportunities for collaboration to unlock more advanced and useful solutions.
The Solution:
With some time, I came to realize the need for a focus on research operations in pursuit of a more holistic design approach for our business, beginning with a shared understanding of our product users through User Persona research artifacts. I took advantaged the recent mandate for all products to work within one single product Management System (Aha!) and began building a User Personas Repository through the provided Aha! documentation template. Along with my manager and several business stakeholders, I altered the template to include key user persona details as well as user needs as they pertain to our business’s product and feature specific data. With this user personas repository, we can…
Gain a shared understanding of industry nomenclature and our users’ pain points, needs, goals, and product use cases
See how user personas link to product features so that we can recognize opportunities for shared development
Link user personas to future roadmap items to build a clear, informed view of our solutions landscape and ensure roadmaps are aligned
Dyson revolutionized the vacuum and then blow dryer. Now they’re offering a hair care line. Do we trust them with CPG or should they stick to appliances?
This is an example of a patient room that's been developed via Evidence Based and Human Centered Design. It takes dedicated research from reputable sources, experiences and information from multiple clinical team members and stakeholders in the healthcare development, and intentionally tracks design decisions and their effect on healthcare.
