“The Enchanted Lake” (12” x 12” on stretched cotton-duck). I’ve been thinking about lakes (well, a particular lake) recently, so here’s a painting that surfaced from the past. It’s a spec painting I did a long while back which was purchased by a terrific, long-term collector in London. I think I had in mind (as ever) the strange, beguiling East German kid’s TV programme from the sixties: “The Singing Ringing Tree”. The fish in that programme gets trapped in the lake which freezes over, whereupon the haughty princess rescues him, and furthers the rehabilitation of her heart. This episode has always haunted me. I think the fish in this painting is directly influenced by that memory. It’s in, I guess, an earlier, looser, less-finished style, the trees being just suggestive rather than depicted in root and branch. To me, it seems a strange and enigmatic image to me like it’s from a dream. I don’t have a tall tale to accompany this one so, if there’s anyone out there who’s willing to draw a narrative from it, I’d be very pleased to read it. #fish #fishing #lake #enchantedlake #enchanted #bunny #trees #lakeside #fishingrod
