Conservation Win! Louisiana Black Bears Are Making A Comeback!
Image via pixabay.com
Great news for teddy bears! The Louisiana black bear that inspired the creation of ‘teddy bear’ was taken off the Federal Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife last week. From a population of 150 in the 1990s when the bear was listed as Endangered, the numbers have now risen to approximately 500-700 in the wild. This is the kind of conservation success story we all want to hear more and more!
Why did the Louisiana black bear become listed as endangered?
The black bear once roamed Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. In the 1900s however the bear was hunted so much that its numbers began to go down rapidly. Habitat loss was also a threat to the bears.
What was done to protect the bear?
The majority of Louisiana black bear habitat falls on private lands. To help the bears find a safe and good habitat, Louisiana farmers voluntarily restored more than 485,000 acres of bottomland hardwood forests in priority conservation areas. Hardwood being the bear’s favourite habitat, made it stay here and grow in numbers!
How did this black bear inspire the creation of ‘teddy bear’?
That’s a fascinating story! During a hunting trip to Mississippi in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt, refused to shoot a black bear that was trapped and tied to a tree by members of his hunting party. This story became so popular that a cartoon appeared on it which then inspired a candy store owner to create the very first ‘teddy bear’. Rest, as they say is history!

The Monarch of Extinction
The Monarch of Extinction
The word Monarch dates back as old as the Greek “monarkhes” and the Late Latin “monarcha” or one who rules alone. It was only in the late 19th century that a large and quite beautiful butterfly was given the regal name monarch. This king of butterflies is only one in a long list of fauna and flora disappearing at a rapid rate due to mankind’s mischievous and misguided war against nature. They are…
