Illegal immigration is a crime. (Illegal=unlawful) Those who cross the boarder illegally (=unlawfully) are criminals. What do we do with criminals? We punish them. Just like if you break into somebody else's home, you are very likely to go to prison. And it has nothing to do with compassion. It is the law.
