PEOPLE DON’T RINSE THEIR RICE?????
I say “oh let me rinse the rice quick” and my parents’ guests look at me like I am speaking in tongues.
I have literally never spoken about cooking to a white person over the age of 35 who knew about rinsing rice. And even if I broaden that to “over 18″ it’s like. Two. Both of whom lived for an extensive time overseas.
I don’t know if it’s a specifically North American ignorance or what but I hadn’t heard of it until my first year of uni, and only then because I was hanging out with Asian people online who mentioned it offhand. The “way to make rice” for seventeen long years of my life was “take the rice straight from the bag in the measuring cup, put it in the pot of boiling tap water (that you didn’t measure), and cook it for about this long, until it’s not crunchy”.
No joke I’ve had people say more often than not something like “oh wow this rice is really good what did you put in it” or even “this is the best rice I’ve ever had” when literally all I did was rinse it and put it in my $20 plastic microwave rice cooker. And then the response is usually “oh wow your rice cooker must be amazing, how can I get one”.
People just never question their great-grandmother’s gruel recipes, I guess.
