Dear future me,
It is okay that you went through undergrad living life to its fullest and meeting new people who gave you a broader perspective of the world. It is okay that you went to grad school and worked long hours for little recognition on a project that did nothing but support previous research. it is okay that you didn’t get into medical school after applying twice because they say the third time is the charm and after seven years, you have more life experiences than the barely-twenties just starting to apply.
It’s okay you took a gap year to find yourself and to learn about who you are as a person. Because honestly, even though you’re sure of the paths you want to take, it never hurts to explore other opportunities to reinforce that desire.
So learn. You’ve learned so much already, it would be a damn shame to miss out on any more opportunities to learn more about this world and the people who live in it.
And about that boy you’ve loved since forever, if he’s not yours by now, he never will be yours. By now, future me, you would have moved onto someone who will love you unconditionally, not just when he comes home and remembers you exist.
Because of all the people in the world, you deserved to be loved entirely. It’s his fault if he can’t see you for the beautiful and amazing person you are.
Love this person who has devoted his entire being to your happiness. Love him more than the boy you spent your childhood with because he fell in love with you despite knowing your heart may never be completely his. Love him because he alone took the risk of thawing out the Ice Princess’s heart.
Give yourself a little credit. You appear so confident in front of other people but it’s just a big facade. If you didn’t know what you were talking about, if you didn’t know what you were passionate about, how on earth did you earn a seat in med school? Because, future me, perseverance is our best trait and a year from now when you read this letter again, you will have earned your coveted spot.
Above all, don’t forget to smile and pray for serendipity.
Love,
Me
