Say NO to Poaching
Photos by @amivitale. In a historical undertaking, a consortium of the world's leading experts from @leibnizizw Avantea, @safariparkdvurkralove and @kenyawildlifeservice performed the first ever ovum pick up on Fatu and Najin, the last living northern white rhino on the planet at @olpejeta conservancy in northern Kenya. This procedure, never before performed on any northern white rhinos, could mark that instant when these creatures were brought back from certain extinction. At this very moment, the precious ova are being rushed to Italy where they will eventually be matured and fertilized with frozen northern white rhino sperm to become embryos which could then be transferred into the southern white rhinos who could gestate the embryos. If this new technology is successful, it could bring this critically endangered species BACK FROM EXTINCTION. This has been a ten year journey, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes sublime as I followed the last northern white rhinos alive on the planet from @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic to Kenya's @olpejeta back in 2009. Witnessing what was believed to be end of the species with the death of Sudan, the very last male northern white rhino, last year broke my heart into a million pieces. Now, I share the news that these incredible human beings are on the cusp of saving the species. I have hope that we are waking up and understanding our responsibility to protect this planet. @bmbf.bund @biorescue_project @leibnizgemeinschaft @MinistryOfTourismAndWildlifeKE @natgeoimagecollection @thephotosociety @nikonusa #NorthernWhiteRhinos #NorthernWhiteRhino #OvumPickUp #NorthernWhiteRhinoRecovery #NajinandFatu #SavetheNorthernWhiteRhinos #SaveOurRhinos #RhinoRecovery #WildlifeConservation #OnlyTwoLeft #StopExtinction #EndExtinction #RacingExtinction #OlPejeta #SavetheChubbyUnicorns #RhinoConservation #RhinoFriday #StopPoaching #EndPoaching #SaynoToPoaching #Rhino #biorescue #biodiversity #wildlifeconservation #WorthMoreAlive #OlpejetaRhinos #ProtectRhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #Kenya #Africa #photojournalism #amivitale #nikonusa #nikonlove #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador (at Ol Pejeta Conservancy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1gCsqSBu2x/?igshid=txwcwa1kcute

Baby rhinos defneds his mother while vets attend to her wounds. . .Baby rhinos are known to stay with their mothers up to 3 years. Sadly, idiot poachers/hunters attack mothers because they are easier targets. Babys are left to fend for themselves.. Rhinos could be gone from the wild within 20 years and extinct within 50 due to the poaching epidemic💔🦏 . . 📽 : @thedodo . via @frankiefizgerald . #africa #exploringafrica #beyondtravel #rhino #mother #protection #conservation # #cute #cuteness #rhino #rhinos #rhinosofinstagram #endsngeredspecies #endpoaching #speciesm #extinctionisforever #compassion #bekind https://www.instagram.com/p/BwrbQWpofQz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=807quyf3pfbk
“Never Forget” By Jennifer Sanchez An elephant never forgets, especially those who witness the death of their own kind lulled by man’s greed and power. We are taking away the very thing that helps these elephants in their daily lives. Ivory isn’t a prized possession to take for our ourselves. It isn’t something to be worn, to decorate a home, nor is it something to claim as our own to show off. Hunting can be an addiction for those who do it, and they all start by saying “I only just want one.” One is never enough for anyone, is it? For each life that is taken, their cries will be heard, and the shadows of innocence will remain. From young to old they will remember man’s terrible deeds, which is why we must do all we can to keep these African elephants alive. Don’t forget, protect. #africanelephant #africanelephants #elephantlibe #elephantart #wildlifeart #animalart #elephantpainting #savetheelephants ##neverforget #babyelephants #babyelephant #endivorytrade #ivorytrade #banivory #banivorytrade #wildaid #careforwild #orphanelephants #babyofmine #motherandbaby #motherandchild #acrylicpaint #acrylicpainting #illustration #illustrationpainting #endpoaching
#Repost @worldanimalnews (@get_repost) ・・・ By: @dr.evanantin 🙌🦏🙏 - A baby #WhiteRhino! This species was originally called the "Wide Rhino" because of its wide (and adorably kissable) upper lip in comparison to the Black Rhino's pointed upper lip. The name eventually "evolved" into the 'White Rhino.' And is this leh'el behbeh Rhino not the most absurdly precious face you've ever seen!??? - - This orphaned Rhino is at the @rhinopridefoundation Rhino Orphanage and they do really incredible work to help orphaned Rhinos and Rhino conservation in South Africa. I'm so thankful for their efforts to help preserve this iconic African species. - - It freakin destroys me that Rhinos are brutally abused and mutilated when being poached for their horns for Asia's Rhino horn trade. That's how this baby lost her mom btw. Certain cultural traditions believe that when the horns are ground to a powder they can then be consumed giving people power and libido and fight disease. It is a myth! - But did you know Rhino horn is simply made of keratin? - - And did you know keratin is the same exact stuff that your nails and hair are made of? - - The outer layers of bird beaks and turtle/tortoise shells are also made of keratin. There is absolutely ZERO scientific evidence that the consumption of Rhino horns, or any keratin for that matter, can elevate your libido or really change your endocrinology or physiology at all. I feel silly even saying that because I always thought that was pretty obvious but apparently a lot of people don't realize that. #DontBuyRhinoHorn #EndTheTrade 👊- 🌍 @worldanimalnews @peace_4animals ST⛔️P #wildlifetrade #EndPoaching #WildlifeCrime #rhinohorntrade🚫 Save #Rhinos #worthmorealive #BanTrophyHunting #protectwildlife #wildlifeaddicts
Animals Poached for the Pet Trade
Several animals are poached to be sold as pets, including:
Parrots and Parakeets: Due to their vibrant colors and friendly nature, parrots and parakeets are highly sought after as pets. However, this popularity leads to poaching from the wild. African Grey Parrots and Amazon Parrots are particularly targeted due to high demand.
Squirrel Monkeys and Marmosets: These small monkeys are popular pets because of their cute appearance and small size, but their wild populations are declining due to poaching.
Reptiles (Chameleons, Ball Pythons, etc.): Rare reptiles are in high demand as pets, leading to poaching. For example, chameleons from Madagascar and Ball Pythons from Africa are often targeted.
Fennec Foxes: Fennec foxes are popular pets due to their adorable appearance and small size. Unfortunately, they are poached from their natural habitats in the deserts of Africa.
Slow Loris: Known for their big eyes and slow movements, slow lorises are popular pets, leading to poaching in Southeast Asia.
These animals are highly sought after as pets, but many species face declining populations in the wild and are at risk of extinction. To prevent poaching, it’s crucial to verify that any pet animal has been legally acquired before purchase.
Many wild animals are the main pillar (Keystone species) of the ecosystem, if they are absent from between the ecosystem could collapse, so will the earth as it would be very difficult for humans to survive otherwise. The main ecosystems affected by poaching include marine, freshwater, grassland, forest, desert, and cropland ecosystems. Now you may wonder that some of these are not habitat to species poached nowadays, but the environmental footprint of these poachers goes a long way since there’s no rock they leave unturned to find the animals they need! 📸@artfamcdk #endpoaching #poachingawareness (at Ol Pejeta Conservancy) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce5VW2hq0r6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
