Nationalism is anti human rights in the Dominican Republic and in the United States. God is not xenophobic, Liberty for all beings not just Human beings, Patriotic is recognizing all people who love the country they call home. #Repost @dominicanxs_ with @get_repost ・・・ Efen Toussaint is a 23 year-old Dominican born in Puerto Plata who felt forced to enroll in the country’s 2013 Regularization Plan meant for foreigners. Despite being born in the Dominican Republic before the citizenship changes of the 2010 Constitution, Efan was detained by immigration agents and taken to the border town of Dajabón. He was released before being expelled to Haiti thanks to the intervention of human rights defenders. * But despite being released, a lieutenant named Perez (name to be confirmed) in Puerto Plata has withheld his documents which prevents him from working, earning a livelihood and makes him even more vulnerable to being expelled from his country inhumanely and unjustly. This is the type of psychological and physical trauma Dominicans of Haitian descent are subjected to daily. * Efen Toussaint es un dominicano de 23 años nacido en Puerto Plata que se vio obligado a inscribirse en el 2013 Plan de Regularización del país destinado a extranjeros. The Dominican Diaspora is convening Wednesday March 21st, 7-9pm Holyrod Episcopal Church 715 West 179th Street, NYC in solidarity with our kin on the island to show that we are many who want a country and society free of racism, hatred, and discrimination. We seek a better homeland, democracy, justice, freedoms, human dignity and rights. We condemn the ongoing racist and xenophobic threats against our Haitian brothers and sisters. We also condemn the politicians and elites who generate anti-immigrant fervor among Dominican society in order to distract from their own corruption and failure to address the basic needs and protect the rights of the country’s most vulnerable people. As immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States, we know all too well that corrupt and incompetent politicians and elites use anti-immigrant rhetoric to distract from their own predatory behavior. We also know that this hateful rhetoric leads directly to the type of threats and violence we are seeing in Pedernales, putting countless families at risk. We stand with our Haitian brothers and sisters and their Dominican-born children, who are no different from the two million Dominicans who emigrated from the Dominican Republic in search of a better life for their families. #DominicanRepublic #Xenophobia #NoMasRacismoRD #EndStatelessness #AquiyAlla Gathering: Holyrod Episcopal Church 715 West 179th Street, NYC 7-9pm (at Holyrood Episcopal Church / Iglesia Santa Cruz)
March 21st, The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was established six years after an event, known as the Sharpeville tragedy or Sharpeville massacre, which captured worldwide attention. This event involved police opening fire and killing 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa, March 21, 1960. This tradition has continued since 1966 all around the world to combat xenophobia and racial discrimination.
