Enefit and Danish company planning offshore wind farm in Gulf of Riga

State-owned energy group Eesti Energia's renewable subsidiary Enefit Green and Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted have signed an agreement which outlines a vision for the development of an offshore wind farm in the Gulf of Riga.

(..) The Baltic states are soon approaching desynchronization from the Russian power grid and offshore wind is considered a reasonable solution for Estonia to also phase out the use of shale oil. "Offshore wind is the most viable option for large-scale renewable energy to deliver high security of supply for the two countries," the release reads.

Enefit Green to double Estonia's wind power output with new wind farm

Eesti Energia's renewables subsidiary Enefit Green is poised to start construction of the Sopi-Tootsi wind farm to create Estonia's largest wind energy area.

The three-stage Kelme project in Lithuania will have an even bigger effect than the Sopi-Tootsi development, Kärmas suggested. “We are beginning the construction of the first stage of the Kelme project in Lithuania and want to make investment decisions for the next parts inside 2023. The Kelme wind farms will add 320 megawatts of generation to the regional market in the form of cheap renewable energy," Kärmas said.Enefit Green is investing around €450 million in the two wind farms, with the Sopi-Tootsi investment at €305 million and the first stage of Kelme requiring €145 million.Enefit Green has long-term energy purchase and sale agreements in place to finance the investments.

Enefit Green, renewable energy arm of state-owned Eesti Energia group, produced 96 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity in May, which is 15 percent more than..

(..)This was the seventh consecutive month for the company’s monthly output of renewable electricity to be growing year over year. In May of last year, the company’s electricity output totaled 83 gigawatt-hours.The amount produced in May 2020, 96 gigawatt-hours, would suffice to cover the average annual consumption of approximately 32,000 households.
