I started this blog by writing a piece on the relationship between ‘true education’ and ‘creating sustainable environment’ on Earth. But then I thought- how ‘true education’ can do wonders to various spheres in one’s life. Be it health, relationships, or jobs, if only I’ve grown up with some wonderful set of ‘ideas’ around me and have been inspired to internalise them as a child & a young person, is when I can truly grow up to be a healthy individual as well as a social being.
Having grown up in a capital city of one of the most populous countries of the world at a time when Capitalism had gripped every sphere of my life and everyone around me, I only saw myself living a very straight jacketed life until the age of 18 years i.e. until I completed my schooling.
My world would revolve around studies, school, friends, books, extra coaching to excel more in subjects I wasn’t good at and a couple of extra-curricular activities like badminton and basketball, few days in the week. Sometimes I wish I had more inspiring teachers and family around me who could have introduced me to a world beyond this monotony of schooling and ‘excelling in life’. I wish they had introduced me to the ‘outside world’ when I was still young.
When I came into college & later on started working with various non profit organisations (which was the career of my choice until recently), whatever little sports I would play as a school kid, I stopped playing. My diet became very haphazard like most young people living in a city & I wouldn’t spend a lot of time with my parents. I would spend up to 5hrs a day commuting to and from work and most of my relationships with my partners didn’t work out. On most weekdays I could only manage to eat dinner by 9.30-10pm. My immunity started to weaken to a level where I would get a cold & cough once a month and light fever every alternate month. And I couldn’t stand for 15 minute straight without getting pain in my feet or sit for long periods without experiencing back ache.
Nothing seemed to be going right, and I would constantly question how any part of my life could become an inch better and healthier. I had these mentoring conversations at work scheduled regularly for the purpose of self development which every staff would have an opportunity to avail. But I would find it ironic how many people at my work couldn’t understand that loving one’s work shouldn’t always come at a cost of one’s health and well being.
I had my first signs of my back muscles weakening in 2012, a year after I started to work full time and it got worse with every passing year. The end of 2014 was when I couldn’t work on my computer for more than 10 minutes without experiencing a severe headache equivalent to a migraine pain. (I was eventually diagnosed with cervical issue in my back). I started to visit an alternative therapist for acupressure sessions. Many people from my organisation and many more young and middle aged people around me were visiting this therapist. Many young people of my age (mostly my colleagues & friends) around me were experiencing similar signs of fatigue and pain but wouldn’t feel motivated to change any part of their lifestyle.
I was blessed to have a wonderful therapist who would encourage me and tell me not to visit her again until I promised to bring changes to my lifestyle like having dinner on time, exercising regularly or doing a more physically strenuous activity as part of my daily routine. My mother, from a young age of 30-35 yrs, has had many physical ailments like severe back & knee ache and has been anaemic for most of her life (According to National Family Health Survey India 1998/1999, 50-60 % of women are anaemic in India). Having seen her complain about constant body aches and not finding time to alter her life routine to improve it, I felt I would like to be as healthy as possible when I have my first child and for as long as I live.
Some basic lifestyle changes I brought into my life in 2015 were:
I slept by 10:00 - 10:30 pm & woke up by 6:00 am
Went for daily yoga classes
Ate a good amount of fruits daily in my breakfast
Started to drink milk daily
Quit ‘Indian milk chai/tea’ that would usually be full of heaps of sugar
Drank lots of water even if that meant visiting loo often
Started saying ‘No’ often to friends and colleagues to stay back late.
And refused medicines for cold and flu & started to rely more on natural home remedies like honey & warm lemon water during cough or turmeric mixed in warm milk & cumin for acidity.
The results were visible very soon and most of them were unexpected:
My cervical pain reduced by 90% in 2 months and disappeared by the 3rd month
I experienced only 10% of stomach cramps & body aches during periods than before
My hyper acidity disappeared
I stopped feeling tired, lethargic & stopped yawning during the day (I would yawn nearly 5-6 times in an hour every day and I hadn’t experienced this ever before. Yawning is considered to be a sign of low energy in the body usually, a good indicator that your body needs rest)
My dry eyes and headaches disappeared
I started to ‘see’ my parents for longer duration of time in a week
I spent a lot more time with cousins and family & also found time to visit a neighbourhood park for walks on weekends
And I still would reach work on time and spend enough time with my colleagues and friends during the week.
For the past couple of months now, my Facebook wall (Facebook is a rage in urban and now in rural India as well!) is full of articles on physical & mental well being plus I’ve also become butt of many ‘well being & yoga’ jokes amongst my friends. But, I take it in a positive stride hoping that many more young people can feel motivated to bring about lifestyle shifts.
As I look back I feel the lack of mentoring and support as a child and a young person from the society comprising of my family, teachers, mentors, colleagues & friends who could have helped me and taught me some wonderful lessons about ‘prioritising in life’, ‘emotional & physical well being’, about ‘developing & nurturing relationships well’ , about ‘decision making’ & ‘life’. But was there ever a time and space where all these things could have become a natural part of my growing up and of other children & young people in India? Which reminds me, some private schools in Delhi have a wonderful motto these days- ‘Preparing children for a future’, makes me and many of us here wonder, whether they really do any of that in true sense?
It would be wonderful if schools could expose children in India to the nature around us more, try real life experiments like using natural home remedies and seeing its positive effects in one’s life with children or build skills in children to grow basic food items like herbs, chillies and lemons in their houses & schools. Teach ‘proper cooking’ skills like making rotis & rice with curries to both boys and girls (and not just some frivolous salads and sandwiches like many of us learnt in elementary school in India, I think that too only in private schools & boys were happily given the levy of choosing other ‘craft’ subjects over cooking!). If arts could become as ‘mainstream’ as other subjects & taught and valued as much as ‘math’, ‘language’ & ‘science’ for well rounded growth of a young human being.
If in schools as well as in their homes children could see value and imbibe some habits & routine of play/exercise when they see adults around them doing the same. If families could build a positive bond with their children from a young age and act as an emotional anchor to them during adolescence and in life. (There is a lot of knowledge that is imparted verbally in India in schools and at home but completely the opposite of that is followed by teachers, parents and adults in general.) If teachers, parents & bosses could start setting positive examples of a healthy lifestyle themselves and not only promote academics and profession that lead to earning lots of money or ‘satisfaction’...
Surely, in India which is brimming with 47% of young population i.e. under 24yrs as of 2014 , it’s a challenge to ensure that all these young people in eventuality become healthy and happy citizens and individuals. The onus i feel lies with many adults in the society who at an individual level can create a significant difference in their ‘circle of influence’. If I can take responsibility for my immediate friends & family and co-workers I’m sure the ripple effect can begin soon. This is what I believe is ‘true education’ for a human being.
And on this last note I’m reminded of Jiddu Krishnamurti, “What the individual is, the society is. What you are matters infinitely. That is not a mere slogan but, if you go into it really deeply, you will discover how significant your actions are, how what you are affects the world in which you live, which is the world of your relationships, however small, however limited.
