“Ah, Miss Sinclair,” Weems said tightly. “Here to collect your delinquent I presume?”
Enid plastered on a smile.
“What can I say? I see scorched topiary and I think of Wednesday.”
“Don’t we all?” Weems turned back to Wednesday. “Well, I suppose I’ll need to decide what to do with you before I let you go. It’s difficult for me not to consider a suspension. I’ve cut you as much slack as possible since you saved the school last semester–and, I suppose, last year, and twice the year before that–but my patience, and more importantly, that of the school board’s, is running thin.”
Enid’s heart skipped an anxious beat at the thought of Wednesday being sent home, even for a week or two. Besides, knowing Wednesday, every time she left Nevermore, it was a gamble on whether she’d actually come back.
“How about community service?” Enid proposed.
Weems raised an eyebrow. It seemed as good a sign as any for Enid to proceed.
“As I’m sure you know, I’m chairman of our student events committee, and we do have our Spring formal coming up, and to be honest, we could really use the help-”
“Fine, fine,” Weems said, clearly eager for the headache to be over. “That sounds like a fitting punishment. Besides, she’s much better behaved when you’re babysitting her anyway.”
Enid couldn’t tell if it was this last infantilizing remark or the general concept of student event planning that had Wednesday looking particularly murderous.
“I’d rather you executed me,” she said.
Perhaps Weems could also hear the frustrated grate in Wednesday’s voice. She smiled and clasped her hands.
“It’s perfect then. You’re both excused.”
