It's very striking in hindsight just how much Gristol's lack of priorities stands out, not just in the sense that he never really thinks through the full extent of his plans, but also just how much he outright glosses over the incredibly impressive stuff he ACTUALLY achieved in exchange for stuff he hasn't done at all in his mindscape. Like, he fixates so much on his grand scheme of bringing back Maligula and basically celebrating too soon despite having not achieved that part yet, or figured out what he plans to do after he actually gets there...and yet just utterly glosses over the fact that he managed to INFILTRATE THE PSYCHONAUTS and basically got nearly everyone in the organization to like him.

Really does feels like he's so fixated on the fact that he's not being worshipped like a rich king that he misses how easily he could get people to view him as a worthwhile person just through his charismatic personality and surprisingly strong work ethic alone.

Could you imagine if he could’ve even heard when all the agents are like oh no! Nick’s brain has been stolen!! The way they just comedically adore that man. Instead he’s a stupid idiot up in Truman’s office lying down all day.

He’s a smooth operator going undetected for like what a good 5-10 years? He’s gotta be like 30-something so he could’ve started anytime when he was an adult.

And you know the psychonauts is even not really super non-psychic accessible (because it’s a more fun game if you use your powers) so I guess he’s basketball slam dunking packages up into the right chutes

And he lets his hotel room languish in disgusting filth bc he’s not even focused on like. Finding a place to live beyond that, bc that means planning for the future in a way that DOESNT fit his ludicrous scheme

I think it's because people just see an easy designated punching bag online and view it's supposed "shittiness" as carte blanche to mistreat anyone who dares to not be part of that mob. We've seen it happen many times over the years.

Star Wars. Sonic the Hedgehog. RWBY. If there's a punching bag available, people will do everything they can to justify punching it.

A lot of people enjoy being cruel, but they hate being seen as cruel. So when an opportunity pops up where they can be as awful as possible because "the person/group/thing deserves it"? They just jump on it like hyenas to bloody carcasses. And then they get to pretend it's all justified to be an asshole because they're "on the right side", and will get protected and praised for their cruelty until it's not the socially acceptable thing to do anymore, or they just jumped onto the next bandwagon/fad for them to be an asshole about. Then they'll just go "Oh I'm so sorry, it wasn't that bad, can you just ignore and pretend I wasn't an absolute asshole that probably hurt you immensely? KTHXBAI. Oh and if you dare to call me out, I'll call you thin-skinned and sensitive but I'm just a victim UwU"

And the reality is that even IF this thing or media had a deserved bad reputation, more often than not that STILL doesn't justify being cruel about it. But a lot of people WANT to be cruel about it.

You are definitely not wrong. And it's gets so exhausting after a while, especially if you engage with that group, but even if you don't just seeing all the hate can wear you down after so long of seeing the same complaint (valid or not) over and over and over. Whether the piece of media deserves it or not, it just becomes redundant after a certain point.

It's hard to fight the urge to fight back, to not defend something you cherish so deeply, because you know the other person wants to get you riled up, they want act like they've got some make believe moral high ground because they're "objectively" right about how this piece of media should be perceived.

As I said in my original post, it's okay to not like something but that doesn't mean you have to make that vitriolic disdain your entire personality. More people need to figure out the ancient and therapeutic art of "Disengage if You Don't Like."

Now this also isn't to say we can't criticize media. As much as I love RWBY and will always defend it from its haters, I have my fair share of complaints about how certain elements were handled, mostly in the first four Volumes and especially in V4 itself. However, do those criticisms I have derail my overall feelings toward this show? No. Not at all. But I've already spoken at length about my feelings so I'm not going to repeat myself again here.

If "Summer and Raven both got into a situation that led to the death of the Spring Maiden" is really a thing, then I wonder if Sundered Rose still has the dried blood on the blade of the axe.

Or maybe if Raven's Omen sword originally had a regular blade, but it got shattered in the fight/was covered in the Spring Maiden's blood. So Raven forsook her original sword's blade in exchange for the Dust Blades. And both of them parallel Jaune's situation in V8/Rusted Knight elements for Summer Rose.

i think, if there's any changes to weapons, sundered rose is the more likely suspect—the name itself is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy if there's a similar situation to what happened to crocea mors lmao

plus, there's not really any apparent change to omen compared to the strq photo (i.e. she already has the dust blades back then), no particular behavior raven exhibits towards it beyond sharpening the blade (right before cinder and co arrive) that would strongly indicate unfortunate memories connected to omen / one of its blades.

(not that that means there isn't, necessarily, in grand scheme of things; tyrian kills clover with harbinger, an image you wouldn't expect to scrub out of your mind that quickly, yet qrow doesn't hesitate to pick his weapon up later, so like. could omen have been used to kill / seriously injure spring? totally. doesn't necessarily mean it was raven using it in that moment, tho.)

raven also has an apparent change in her appearance via the mask (as far as we know), so yeah, i'd bet any 'battle damage' would be found on sundered rose (and maybe summer is missing an eye with a scar that tells a story just by looking at it).

Consider: they think Grimm are invading and spend the run time doing hilarious Scooby-brand hijinks, only at the end for Ruby to just miss cutting up one of the "Grimm" with her scythe, then the man in the Grimm costume immediately reveals himself because holy shit he almost for real died just then

Might have forgotten, but does Gran Torino ever get a visit from Ghost Shimura? If so, does he nearly get a heart attack from sheer shock?

The answers are yes and no, respectively. Yes because Nana is totally down to chat with her old buddy Sorahiko, and no because one of Izuku’s ground rules for using his power is that he doesn’t spring surprise ghost visits on people he actually likes. Surprise ghost visits are for psychological warfare only.

My brain is slow, but there's something to be said about how both Bob and Cassie's core bosses have Maligula themed elements to them, even if it's not really commented or focused on.

Truheltia Memonstria's got a giant whirlpool circling the main boss island, highlighting how the alcohol has dominated Bob's life that only an island remains...but it's also very much an aquatic environment that doesn't feel out of place to an attack or location Maligula would use.

And the Die-brarian? A platform surrounded by liquid ink, and her outfit has a lot of qualities similar to the outfit Maligula wears.

Their worlds might be focused elsewhere, but the influence of Maligula on their psyches is very much present.

yeah i find this element of how maligula manifests in the boss fights to be really fascinating! same can't really be said for compton, and then ford and helmut both don't rly have boss fights to begin with. ...well helmut has the visual *beats* of a boss fight but its just hitting her with time time stop a few times. I've actually always wondered if they wanted to make that a boss fight and just didnt have the time/money for it. wouldn't be surprised considering we almost didnt get boss fights at all

the diebrarian sharing visual similarities w/maligula is not something ive thought abt before but you're so right actually, especially the really high collar on their dresses

And we have no idea what happened to Crispin after Psychonauts 1, so there might be no way for him to ever get closure or even attempt to apologize, for what it's worth. He'll have to learn to bear it and move forward, hopefully learning from someone in this new age how to do better. Probably Forsythe all things considered.

I'd also imagine Napoleon returns as well in a new mind level, and his character is one of guilt and shame, perhaps framed in how the Bonaparte family wasn't some glorious warriors heritage, but a tyrant who destroyed and shaped things in his own image…and only realized too late what he really was.

And Napoleon has to take a hard look at his own battles (seeing a version of the Waterloo board from Psychonauts 1, now dilapidated and broken in two) and really think about what he's gonna do now.

A new mind level based on trying to figure out how to deal with it, perhaps in reconciliation and putting away the sword, and doing something to try to make amends...or at least learn to carry the burden from then on forward and forge something more worthwhile and new.

I do so love the idea of Fred never getting to resolve that bit of his life completely. Crispin is out there somewhere, excluded from the polycule, who knows if he's doing better or worse.

and Napoleon sticking around feels natural... Napoleon himself in sort of the dregs of what used to be his fine military outfit. he must become a man of the people. he's going to complain about it the entire way there bc Fred's a whiny guy.

I don't have much to add to the concept of the mental world except that maybe it could be even more recursive than the boardgame having fred and napoleon having a smaller boardgame inside it. Like Fred has to dig really really deep to actually self reflect so the scenery has to keep going in on itself fractal style til you get to the core of the issue
