For being a new crew member on the Enterprise, you had a lot of work thrown at you fairly quickly it seemed. Commander Tucker told you of various things that needed to be upgraded or fixed around the ship, that apparently the other engineers were not available to do. So, you began working on your first day deep within the ship. A fairly secluded area that hardly anyone ventured down to unless there was work needed to be done.
You were now a few days in as Assistant Chief Engineer, and you had barely interacted with anyone on the ship apart from other engineers, First Officer Commander T’Pol, and of course the doctor. Otherwise, you had stayed fairly busy and isolated while working on the ship.
A few hours into your shift, you had gotten quite a bit done. As you made notes of your work as well as other changes you needed to make, you stopped when you heard a distant sound. You looked around and strained your ears, wondering if the noise would come again.
When it did, it only raised your confusion, you could have sworn it sounded like a dog whining. Setting down your pad, you walked out of the room you were in and looked down a short hallway. Hearing quiet padded footsteps coming your way, followed by a short whine, you walked down the hall a bit more. As you did, you stopped as a small beagle rounded the corner. As the dog saw you it stopped for a moment before beginning to wag its tail, letting out a short bark.
Crouching down you smiled at the dog, surprised to be seeing one at all. “Hello there.” You said softly while reaching out your hand.
The dog came trotting towards you, tail wagging rapidly as he licked your hands. You let out a giggle and began to pet him.
“And who are you?” You asked with a chuckle. “I didn’t realize I would have such a cute crew member, It’s quite the distraction honestly.” You said softly as you talked to him.
Suddenly from somewhere on the same level of the ship you heard a sharp whistle. The dog perked his ears up and after giving you a small glance began to run to the source of the noise. ‘Must be the owner.’ You thought to yourself ‘I wonder who it is.’ Standing up, you considered going to find out, but changed your mind and instead turned back and headed to finish your work. Though, with a silent hope you’d see your new friend again.

After a few days passed, you wondered if you would ever see that dog again. But not seeing any sign of him anywhere on the ship, you began to wonder if you had imagined him. ‘Maybe I should ask someone about it.’ You thought to yourself as you continued your work yet again.
This would be the last day you’d be working in this area of the ship. Part of you was happy, as you had been isolated and working alone the entire time. You’d like to see the rest of the ship someday, and meet more of the crew-members.
A couple hours later, you were nearly finished with all your work. Sitting down, you checked over your list of tasks once more. Suddenly, hearing the sound of padded footsteps running around, you spun to look behind you, the idea of your new friend visiting sending a jolt of excitement through you.
Standing and heading towards the door, you suddenly hear a voice calling out “Porthos!”
‘Porthos?' You thought, just as you stepped out into the hall.
As you did, you felt something jump up on you. Looking down you see the familiar furry face of who you now knew as Porthos. You smiled and let out a laugh. Crouching down you began to pet him “Why, hello again.”
“So, you’re who he’s been looking for.”
At the sound of the voice, you looked up, somewhat surprised to see Captain Archer standing in front of you. You stood up at attention, “Captain.” You said with a curt nod.
He smiled at you and took a few steps closer “I don’t think I know you.” He said with curiosity lacing his face.
“Oh, I’m the new Assistant Chief Engineer Y/n L/n Sir.” You said introducing yourself.
He smiled and reached out his hand, his you shook with a nod and smile. “How long have you been on the ship Lieutenant?”
“About a week sir.” You said, trying not to look down at Porthos as he whined and scratched at your leg.
The Captain however did, and smiled at Porthos' apparent desperation for your attention. “You’ve been down here the whole time then?”
You smiled “More or less, but I am almost done with the work down here.”
“Good, good.” He said as he crouched down, petting Porthos, and trying to get a hold of his leash “Porthos got down here by accident a few days ago, and ever since he’s been trying to force his way in. I wasn’t sure why until now.” He said as he looked up at you with an amused smile.
You smiled in return, and tried not to get too lost in the Captain’s eyes. You had seen him from a distance a few times, but never up close. You hated how attractive you found him, it was too distracting. “Yes, I must say I was surprised when he came in, I wasn’t aware there were any animals on board. But, it was a nice surprise.” You said as you smiled at Porthos.
Captain Archer stood back up now “I find he’s good for crew morale.” He joked.
As you laughed along with him, the Captain couldn’t help but feel enamored by you. You were certainly attractive, and kind in voice and demeanor. Plus there was something behind your eyes and smile that made him appreciate why Porthos seemed to take such a liking to you.
Hearing Porthos whine again, Captain Archer looked down to see Porthos spinning a web around your legs with his leash as he excitedly ran around you.
“Oh-” You said as he began to trip you, dragging the leash under one of your feet.
As you began to stumble, the Captain reached out, catching you. “Porthos!” He called out as he tried to get the leash untangled from your legs.
You let out a chuckle as you managed to step out of it finally. As the Captain looked at you, you both realized your faces were very close, and his arms were still wrapped around your waist from when he caught you.
You cleared your throat and pulled away “Thank you Captain.” You said with a shy smile.
“Of course.” He said with a nod as he looked down at Porthos with a stern gaze, as Porthos finally sat down, cocking his head in confusion. He let out a short laugh and shook his head before looking over at you.
“Well, I need to get back on the bridge, but, uh-” He looked down at Porthos and then back at you. “I’d hate to separate such good friends for too long. So, since I haven’t had to chance to get to know my new Assistant Chief Engineer, how about you join me for dinner tonight?”
Your eyes widened in surprise as you cleared your throat a bit “Dinner? Tonight?”
He nodded “Yes. My quarters, eighteen hundred? I insist, and I’m sure Porthos does too.” He said while looking down at him.
Looking down at Porthos he looked over at you and wagged his tail a bit. Unable to stop the smile that spread across your face, you let out a soft chuckle before looking back at the Captain. “I’d be honored Sir.” You nodded.
Captain Archer nodded and smiled one last time at you, his eyes lingering on yours for a moment before he turned away. “Good. See you then Lieutenant L/n.” Turning fully away, he and Porthos left you alone again.
You did not return to your work until the sound of their footsteps disappeared. Letting out a nervous breath, you tried to ignore your rapid heartbeat and the anxiety at the idea of having dinner with the Captain.
‘It’s a formal dinner, he’s just being polite, that’s all.’ You thought to yourself as you got back to work.
But as you thought more about how he looked and smiled at you, you couldn’t help but think to yourself that maybe it was more than just a formal, polite dinner. And as the thought stayed constant in your mind, you found yourself quickening your pace, to make sure you got done well before eighteen hundred hours.
It would only be polite to make sure you were nice and clean before a dinner like that. A totally formal, polite dinner.
