While it is great to see the price of gasoline go down, the cost of some other things will be going up in 2015. The Enterprises TV show shares what we will be paying more for in the new year.

  Employers will pay a little more to hire a good employee in 2015. Wages have grown and unemployment is down. Plus, the country is finally moving in a positive direction as far as hiring good workers at a decent wage.

  Electricity is going to cost more in 2015. It is the only energy category expected to rise in cost next year.  And if that isn’t shocking, the cost of power rose almost three percent from 2013 to 2014.

  Health care premiums are going to rise. Some health insurance companies have already raised their rates and the premiums under the Affordable Care Act will also go up. There are more companies vying for customers in each state now. We would hope this would keep the costs lower.

  California passed a new law which requires farmers raising egg-laying hens to make hen houses more spacious for the birds. Thus, farmers across the country are doing the same thing to be compliant. This means the price of eggs is going to go up.

  Want coffee with the eggs? The price of it has already gone up and will rise a little more in the new year. A drought in Brazil last in 2014 raised prices and they will continue to go up a wee bit more in 2105.

  The Enterprises TV show also notes that price of chocolate, bourbon and airfare is set to rise also.  Even though the price of some essentials is rising, so are wages.  So there is some good news for the new year.

  Finding a good contractor takes time and patience.  Visit review websites like Angie’s List to see if there are any recommendations in the local area. Ask friends and neighbors for a reference. Make a list of questions for the contractor such as how many jobs are completed on time? What is the timeframe to get this job done? What time do you start and end every day? What days don’t you work?

  Keep a record of all communication with the contractor. This includes all email, certified letters, phone calls, texts and voice messages.

  Monitor the work every day. If they are building a wall, use your own level to be sure the wall is straight. If the contractor gets defensive, remember that it’s your money being spent and that you have to live with the results of their work.

  Don’t pay for the project in full. Pay half before the contractor starts. Pay the balance when the project is done. This should protect the homeowner should the contractor disappear before the job is completed or if something goes wrong. Managers need to do more than manage. They need to lead. Guide the team with clear objectives. Coach team members about how to accomplish a task and do not give orders.

Team members should offer ideas to the group. No one idea is better than the others. One idea may work better, but everyone’s suggestion should be taken into consideration.

It is best to bite your tongue and push pride to the side if the need to vent out of frustration is strong. No one likes to be yelled at, talked to in a condescending tone of voice or be berated.

Write team suggestions down on a whiteboard and talk objectively about them.

Let everyone speak without interruption from others.

Be aware that the quietest person in the group is the one who is observing everything and may have something valid to say. Let that person speak.
