In this Tumblr posting series, I will be compiling various ideas, tips, and tricks for throwing a memorable James Bond themed party for friends and family. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, a Bond film premiere, Halloween, New Year, or just entertaining for the fun of it, these party ideas will help you take your bash to the next level. Each post will deal with a different party-planning concern and will consider things like budget and prep-work.
#2: Activities: 007 Game Night
The biggest mistake people make when throwing parties is not planning activities. Look. No one wants to stand around drinking and eating snacks and making awkward conversation. All that happens during that sort of party is people bored-drinking to oblivion, sticking only with the people they know (and thus becoming cliques), and only talking about work or school or their kids. Ugh. Planning a game night is a great way to break the ice, stave off boring small-talk, and keep people engaged.
Activities Rule of Thumb #1: Think like an 8-year-old. If an activity would make your inner 8-year-old happy and excited, do that. It’s not dorky—it will make your party *fun* and not a chore to plan or attend.
1. Game stations: for large groups of people, you might choose to set up game stations around your entertaining space that people can circulate through. Dust off your checkers and backgammon sets for your introverts, set out Cards Against Humanity, or hell, Snakes and Ladders. Whatever. Or ask your guests to bring a game they like to play—like a potluck, but with dice and cards. (Avoid Monopoly tho, because that game has a demonstable history of destroying relationships, lol)
2. Poker Tournament: you can buy decks of cards at your local dollar store, and find chip sets in game sections of Walmart, Target, or Amazon for anywhere between $6-$100+. The price will depend on your aesthetic and budget. Cheap chips look cheap, but you can find some good sets for $30-50. You don’t have to play for money, but I suggest creating a great prize basket for the winner(s) of the tournament.
Specific Bond Merch: You can buy licensed Bond playing cards ($7 USD) or a 300-piece poker set ($147 USD). If you’re on a tight budget, I’d avoid the merch.
3. Trivial Pursuit 007 Edition: Found online at the official 007 store, the game costs $14 USD and would be a great group activity if your friends are also Bond nerds. https://007store.com/products/james-bond-trivial-pursuit
4. Escape Room in a Box: If you want to get people interacting, you can do an escape room! Not only are escape rooms on trend right now, you can buy games online for about $25 and play at home. You and your guests will have to work together and solve puzzles and mysteries under a time limit.
5. Dominos: You can get a decent set of dominos in double-six, double-nine, or double-twelve counts (perfect for a gathering of double-ohs, right?), and a shout-out to the Bond Girl of Thunderball, Domino. ($10-15)
