I still pay my water bill by check. There’s a dropbox right around the corner. So, it’s no big deal for me. After dropping the payment in plain white envelopes for months, I began to leave doodles on the envelopes. It was more of a way to entertain myself while paying bills than anything else. Doing paperwork is boring but getting to do that with the occasional quick pen sketch? Not bad.

Thing is, I had misplaced my bill statement a few months back and had to call up to see how much I owed.

The secretary on the phone in a very stern voice asked, “Who is the one drawing on the envelopes?”

Her tone made me feel like I was about to be scolded by a teacher in third grade.

In a meek little squeak, I said, “Me.”

“OH,” she laughed, “We love them! Every month we look out for your envelopes. We put them around the office.”

Honestly, I was kind of embarrassed that my doodles were being stuck on the walls but at the same time happy that they got a kick out of it.

Last month, I lost my statement again and had to call up once more to see how much I owed.

The secretary, once again in a serious voice, went, “Oh, yeah, the “Artist.” We want our drawings…”

In my head I could hear a sarcastic, “No pressure,” being added.

So, here are the last two doodles. Honestly, like I said they are fun to do. Just plain ol’ pen sketches.
