You watch movies and television and popculture will have you believe that our ancestors who started off in caves lived in dark, dirty, damp and sparse ones.
But I bet they were actually nice. I can see them weaving grass into mats and lining the floors. I would even put money down that mats were one of our earliest inventions because lying down on bare cold cave dirt floors was a good way to get hypothermia. To prevent this, we probably laid down dried grass. And then someone figured out how to weave that grass into more comfortable mats that were easier to move around.
Then came the lamps. There had to be lamps. They were in naturally dark caves. Lamps were a necessity because of this. They were probably another one of our earliest inventions. Something to light up every corner of the cave so you can see where to put down your mat.
Then came baskets and bowls. A collection of them to use to gather things.
In between, our ancestors decorated the walls with paintings.
You know there were furs and hides everywhere. Furs and hides for blankets. Furs and hides for clothing. And if you have clothing, you had jewelry. This is also one of our oldest inventions. Beads everywhere.
Add a fire pit because while lamps give light, you are going need a bigger fire for warmth.
Add some more art in the way of carvings and clay figures. Maybe they were for decoration. Maybe they were there for religious reasons. Either way, they were there.
Suddenly that supposedly dark, sparse cave is starting to look cozy.
That's how it probably was. Something that the modern person would walk into and go, "Ohhhh, I could take a nap here." Something that looks very human.
