Something that bothers me is this idea surrounding zero-waste or self-sufficiency that you need to do it 100%. Like, no, that’s not practical and for the vast majority of the population, not possible. But does that mean we shouldn’t do what we can? Also no.
Can I raise chickens and have fresh eggs everyday? No, I live in a one bedroom apartment and it’s illegal and probably not fun for the chicken. BUT, I can grow herbs or microgreens on my window sill. A lot can be grown from cuttings or even fresh herbs from the grocery store. I end up with more green in my diet and save money in the long run.
Can I buy literally everything I consume without packaging and keep my year’s worth of trash in a mason jar? Nope, that is not practical for me, but more importantly it’s not in my budget. Plastic free food tends to be more expensive for some bizarre reason I can’t comprehend. I get it when I can, but a lot of the time it’s too expensive, or even more often, not available at the low-end grocery stores I shop at. BUT, I do what I can, and I try to reuse the packaging I do end up with. It’s a small environmental impact but it’s better than no environmental impact.
