Artist’s description: “A vertical black and white digital illustration depicts a figure with long hair, a short sleeve button up jumpsuit and high heel boots yanking up a thorny vine. This vine with circular leaves twists around the figure as they try to uproot it. It’s flowers have skull faces in their center. The vines roots grow out of two US dollar bills. One bill face has a white klan hood and says SUPREMACY. The second bill has a skull face and says CAPITALISM. From the bottom right where the vine is not growing, there are healthy plants and small pollinators coming in to fill the space.”

Some might say that my impatience is generational, stemming from a childhood of flashing screens and instant messages; Naess would probably revoke my naturalist gig entirely. And sure, it's generational; I'll buy that. But my impatience - in this case, at least - is not the result of a carefully cultivated short attention span. It's a result of growing up with the overwhelming knowledge that we're running out of time. Leisurely, reverent nature writing made me uncomfortable, and since that summer, my discomfort has only grown. It feels indulgent to me, and blindered, like complimenting a friend's silky hair while she's being stabbed to death.

Isn’t it interesting that scientists and people who care about the environment and our Earth are often cast as idiots who care about the “wrong” type of animal (see “Save the Snails” in the Wally McDoogle books), hate humanity and are always “wrong” because they don’t about humans “first” by people who have conservative stances or think they’re “logical” for not caring.

[We] are not safe in assuming that we can preserve wildness by making wilderness preserves.... If we do not have an economy capable of valuing in particular terms the durable good of localities and communities, then we are not going to be able to preserve anything. ...Apparently because our age is so manifestly unconcerned for the life of the spirit, many people conclude that it places an undue value on material things. But that cannot be so, for people who valued material things would take care of them and would care for the sources of them.... I would call our economy, not materialistic, but abstract, intent upon the subversion of both spirit and matter by abstractions of value and of power. In such an economy, it is impossible to value what one has. What one has (house or job, spouse or car) is only valuable insofar as it can be exchanged for what one believes that one wants--a limitless economic process based upon boundless dissatisfaction.
