- That this place is basically run on belief. Dangers are real as long as you believe in them. Stop and they are cardboard cut-out pictures that can't do more than give you one hell of a paper cut XD Or they just disappear into nothing.
- The Doctor saying that the Master of the place has a fantastic mind.
- Jamie, with the knife, hacking his way through cobwebs. Ah, Jamie, never stop being you.
- I just love the whole Jamie face swapping thing. It's so ridiculous and anywhere else it wouldn't work but here it just fits right in. I also love Zoe furiously shaking her head no when the Doctor goes to put on the wrong eyes again and smiling widely at the right mouth. It's like sorry Doctor, you be face blind, let the one who has known him a hot minute but memorises everything do it rather than you, who has known him a while now.
- lol, everyone's slightly delayed reaction jump scare to the door closing behind them when they enter the house, when the door was anything but quiet.
- The Master wanting the Doctor to find his way through all of the traps, because intellectuals. He's just sitting there, watching and cheering him on XD
- Jamie and doing smart things. I love him when he does smart things.
- Can we just appreciate Jamie rock climbing to get out of trouble? Look at him go. I'm so proud of him and all his solutions to problems he runs into this episode.
- The entire conversation between Jamie and Rapunzel.
- The Doctor and Zoe's adventure being a WIP that Jamie is reading. That's just the best damn thing.
Dislikes
- Wait...what happened to the Redcoat chap standing in front of the door? There to get Jamie all up in a huff and attack and gone the moment he is frozen and has to have is face replaced again. Just...what?
- Umm, why is Zoe all ew spider web at touching the webs around the candles, when she was basically walking through a forest caked in web two seconds beforehand with not one single uttered complaint about it? Then, not another complaint again.
- Uh, Doctor, Jamie is missing. You want to go find him now? Fanboy over meeting Gulliver later.
Awesome
- I actually really like the cave set in this one with all the candles around. This one was a hit for me.
- Yes, Doctor Who, give us some claymation with Medusa's up close snake hair.
Shitty
- WTF is on the Master's head? It looks like it should have a mini propeller on it in some scenes XD
- Oh geeze, that backdrop of Rapunzel's tower when Jamie first starts going up her hair. That one doesn't work for me. If the hair hadn't been just...there on it, and instead the window was an actual window and not a painting of a window, sure, but nope.
- Medusa's outfit. Just...what is that?
In Conclusion
Yes. I love this story. The Doctor has figured out that they are in a land of Fiction and that if they don't believe in things then they don't exist.
Zoe is always believing in things that don't exist because they are standing right in front of her, even when the Doctor is yelling at her to say they don't exist to get them to go away. I love that her logical mind can't figure out that because she can see and touch it, it doesn't exist, even though she intellectually knows it. She's having so much trouble here.
And all my love to Jamie just doing his own thing and getting places by just being him. You go, my lad, you go.

Likes
- I love Jamie running in to save himself by basically running wildly at his gunned opponent with a knife in hand and screaming out his battle cry. It's his way and it's wild and dangerous, but boy is he going to do it until it kills him! Jamie, one who never stops being a product of his time.
- The Master having two different voices he is using. One for when he talks to himself which must be his true voice, and the one he uses which eerily reminds me of Lumic in the Cyberman two partner in series two with Ten and Rose. He uses that voice to order around the robots.
- People showing up, threatening or helping, only to disappear again once out of sight. I love this. It's so weird and mysterious. And we finally have had The Master actually named The Master.
- This is the most confused the Doctor has been and I am living for it. Look at him and his utterly bamboozled looking face at children riddling him almost to death and dropping a dictionary into his hands from nowhere. Hahahah!
-Forest of Words. 'Nuff said.
- The Doctor refusing to let Jamie know why he has a different face. So much so he tells Zoe he'll tell her later what happened XD
- And it ends on them all being ready to be skewered by a Unicorn. Nice :D
Dislikes
- Why did the Doctor and Jamie laugh at Zoe being trapped in a jar? I get laughing at solving the riddle, but damn, you want to get her out before you start laughing at the situation?
Awesome
- The set. The set. The set. Just...letters forming words, forming sentences, forming sayings. And how they set up everything to be recognisable, but at the same time easily could be something else.
- What they did to get a stand in for Jamie for the week when Frazer got sick. It fits into the story perfectly and is a total study in face blindness XD As an Autistic who headcanons the Doctor as Autistic, this made my day when I first saw it.
- I really like it when they get animals on set, because I love animals. Nice horse for the unicorn there :D
Shitty
- I have never met a more noisy door in my life. Part of it is probably sound effects, if not all of it, but damn. That would drive me insane XD
- One of the close ups on the horse's face, it looks frightened, boo. Treat your animal actors better, Doctor Who.
In Conclusion
They are in a forest made up entirely of words. I mean, come on, that right there is awesome. That got me so good. I love reading and words and so this story, with its weirdness and words was right up my alley. Seriously, it's so clever what they do with this too.
This entire episode, they're stuck in a forest of words. And I love the entire concept of it.

- I love how utterly geeky Zoe and the Doctor are being. Jamie's like "We're gonna die! Move us, Doctor!" And the Doctor and Zoe are like "Have you ever seen anything so beautiful as a rolling red river of death coming straight for us? Wonderful! Fantastic!" Jamie is just so done with these idiot geniuses XD
- Oh my god, Jamie's "Reality's getting too hot anyway" to the Doctor saying using the emergency unit will take them out of space time.
- The look Zoe gives the Doctor when he orders her to stay in the TARDIS. Like hell she's going to follow that order, Doctor XD
- The Doctor fighting someone trying to get into, or is in, his mind. I always like the little scenes with the Doctor where you know they have got telepathic ability.
- I like that it is shown that while the audience can see these robot things, Jamie and Zoe can't, even though they are surrounded and definitely being watched. I do like that they are both freaked out by it.
- Boom, suddenly visible robot things. Nice. And they have the power to give you headaches by using the power of circles.
- The Doctor losing his fight with his battle and stepping outside even though he didn't want to.
- The introduction of The Master...or IS IT?! Dun Dun Duuuuun.
Dislikes
- As much as I understand it, Zoe running off and outside without actually seeing her home city when the doors are opened, and by now she should know she would if that is what was outside. So impatient she ran outside without using her logic, which is her strong trait. Well, all companions have to make at least one reckless and stupid decision at one point. Here is Zoe's first. An explanation comes up later but honestly Zoe didn't need to be nudged out, she would have left out of plain curiosity regardless.
- When did Zoe become such a screamer? I don't remember this about her character at all. Victoria is supposed to be the screamer, not Zoe.
Awesome
- Gotta be put in here somewhere. It's like a requirement. Zoe's outfit.
- The whole Jamie's face over Scotland scenery with bagpipes playing scene belongs here. Such a nice Jamie scene, him getting to see home again. But it's the actual way they shot it that makes it special.
- Yes, I love model cities in early Doctor Who. The model team for Doctor Who are so creative when it comes to cities and sometimes spaceships.
- I like how they use just endless white to depict nothingness. Usually it is endless black, but nope, Doctor Who goes the opposite route to begin with.
Shitty
- This one could be my imagination, or something I heard outside the actual show, but I swear I heard a door being opened or closed halfway through the Zoe seeing her home and Jamie telling her she isn't scene while they are outside. Am I imagining things or is it really there?
In Conclusion
I haven't watched this one in so long I have forgotten how much I enjoy it when I do watch it. This is one of my ultimate faves, people. I love The Mind Robber.
This first episode introduces us to Unreality. A place outside the time space dimension, where nothingness is inhabited by a mystery voice and robots. Yes.
No, seriously, nothing much happens in this episode, but what does happen is interesting and grabs you. How can Unreality be inhabited? Who is this mystery The Master whose voice is all we hear in this first episode? Can anything truly stop Zoe when she is interested in it, compulsion or no? Why is Jamie dreaming of being skewered by a unicorn? Was it planted, or just something that jumped into his mind naturally?
On the non companion side, we have the Doctor fighting with the voice and losing the battle, but then using his own mind and voice to get Jamie and Zoe back to what he thinks is the safety of the TARDIS. Until, of course, she blows up.
Now, that is an ending.

Season 5 Recap
Welp, another season with big breaks in between, unfortunately. By this point I think all but the first two had this happen. This time between binging a show, I basically have had internet problems galore this time around.
Ah well, back on to the actual recap of this season that I am going on by memory. As always favourites and least favourites first, then onto my companion list. Starting with Victoria, then Jamie, then Zoe. And of course, then the Doctor.
Season 5 for me is a mixed bag. When this season is good, it's great. When it's bad, it's horrible. Not horrible as in the episodes themselves are bad for the most part, but horrible as in there are absolutely horrible telesnaps used in recons horrible.
I am so glad that The Abominable Snowmen is getting animated next guys, so glad. I will definitely do a rewatch of that one. I also plan on doing rewatches of all the ones that are animated after I have already done them, like Evil of the Daleks and Galaxy 4.
My favourites this season are The Wheel in Space and The Enemy of the World. My least favourite is The Abominable Snowmen. I enjoyed nearly all of The Wheel in Space and I loved the plot of Enemy of the World. The Abominable Snowmen is only that bad as far as I am aware of right now, because it is badly done recons. I am so hoping it is better when animated.
Victoria
I really liked Victoria. I thought she was a great companion. She was from the past, but not too far from the past that she is Jamie levels of confused over things. She was sweet and kind and yet had a rebellious and adventurous streak in her. Like her being the one wanting to explore in The Abominable Snowmen when Jamie wanted to stay with the TARDIS.
She's the first person who gets to at least talk about grief. Even if it is not detailed about it. We've definitely had companions lose their family before, she's not the first there, but she is the first to talk about it after the episode they died or we heard about their death.
I also really loved her sending off. It wasn't just BOOM done with, it was drawn out, you could see she wanted to leave from early on and the leaving itself lasted more than a few minutes. Hell, she had a sending off party, basically. Mixed with hugs and sad byes and no love life involved with it either, yay.
Jamie
I love Jamie so much. I love his relationship with the Doctor and how these two just cling to each other. I like that he's from the past and is confused by a lot but never lets that stop him. I loved the relationship he had with Victoria, which was quite sweet, considering he was more her protector in some ways than the Doctor was.
He with Zoe is something else. I now headcanon these two going off and doing kinky things. Whether sex is involved can be up to you XD
Jamie by now has definitely settled into his character and is a stable part of the show. He is fun, so that's always nice.
Zoe
Zoe we don't really know much about just yet.
We know she went through a dangerous procedure to have knowledge planted in her brain like a human supercomputer, which makes her extremely book smart, but that's about it. Oh, that and she worries it means she won't ever feel things like a normal human being.
She's a logical thinker that's looking to expand her emotional horizons. With the Doctor and Jamie. Two of the most overblown emotional people here. Nice choices Zoe. You'll learn a lot.
The Doctor
Ah, Two. I love Two so much. He's fun, he's witty, he can be a sassy bastard when he wants to be. He's great.
He's a lot more attached to Jamie now. They're a lot more touchy feely this season. I have no problems with that at all. I think they work so well together, and that's even just in a platonic way. I love their relationship however one ships them, really. They just click.
I also really liked his relationship with Victoria. he was paternal, since he knew she had just lost her only parent in her father and took her in as her guardian until she found a couple to settle down with. He also got to send her off better than many other companions in the show.
With Zoe, things get a bit wonky, since he obviously likes her, but she's too old to take on as a ward, so the relationship is definitely a lot different.
I think this is the first time outside the short period where it was just Ben and Polly that the Doctor has travelled without someone acting as a teen figure. I mean, Zoe has a full time job off planet and has training. If anything, he'd act as a teacher. Someone to learn from.
I like how he has these different relationships with his companions. One seemed to like things just so with his companions. Child, adult minder and/or fighter. Two takes people as they are and adapts to them organically so that the relationships seem a lot more real. I am now imagining Ian and Barbara with Two and the awesome that could have come from that.
Ah well, What If...? Right?
On to season six which ends Two's run.
The Dominators - Episode Five

Likes
- I like the duo of Jamie and Cully just escaping the hell out of Quarks and surviving with each other. And they constantly are looking up each other's dress/kilt.
- Oh my god, Toba XD Why do I find this guy so hilarious?
- We finally learn the plan for the world and what the drilling is for. Finally.
- I love that it is Jamie who comes up with the logical, good plan in this.
- Ah, the first time the sonic screwdriver is used as something other than a screwdriver. Yes, hello OP tool, you came in way early, didn't you?
- Jamie just blowing the ever loving Hell out of Quarks. My boy! Look at him go!
- I love how the women also move debris and help dig the hole and not just sit around to look pretty. Look at them being equally dirty and covered in filth.
- Hey, a reason given for bad aim in this, hahaha.
- I like that the end credits is lava flows. Nice.
Dislikes
- Look, Rago, dude, we know you're drilling and we know you haven't started the last one and we know Toba believes he's superior and keeps using Quarks to do his dirty work for him, but maybe DON'T say that the power is running low on the Quarks if you don't want others to hear. Seriously. Why is this always happening?
- Wait, that tiny kit with that one block of food was supposed to last years? Jamie just took months worth of food in one bite in that case, lol.
- The Doctor testing a homemade bomb in their tiny little...bomb shelter. Yeah.
Awesome
- Never really put this, but may I just say a planet where all the guys also wear dresses?
- I love how utterly simple the look of the sonic screwdriver is this early. No need to be fancy with the all in one OP tool.
- I like when Jamie and Cully are on the cliff near the end and the camera zooms out and you see the scenery. Nice. Gives scope and more of a look at the island they are on.
- Look at the legs on that space ship just moving into their struts. Nice.
Shitty
- Ah, dead people still breathing is a classic.
- Those shoulder guards. Thank god this is the last time I have to say this for this one.
In Conclusion
Okay, now this episode I liked. Explosions, action, everyone doing their parts, Rago finally living up to the name Dominator, Toba finally learning to take directions.
It's just a shame that it took until the end of the fourth episode for it to become fun. But this episode was all the way through.
Body count - 5. 3 Quarks. Blown up by Jamie. Two Dominators, killed by the Doctor blowing them up. More Quarks died, obviously, but these were the ones i caught on my DVD, which unfortunately was scratched at the end on the last episode and so I may have missed some on screen Quark deaths during the few seconds I missed, which was between the Doctor giving instructions and the Dominators taking off. I only counted the ones that died on screen.
The Dominators as a Whole
For the most part, this one is boring. The Dulcians are passive in a way that gets infuriating most of the time, with a few exceptions. Cully is great, which is good, because he is the Dulcian we mainly follow around.
But mostly, they just bring the whole thing down and episodes that focus on them as a people are just pain boring.
The end of the last episode things pick up though, so if you want to watch any of this and still pick up on the actual story, which is mainly in the last episode, just watch episode 5.
Apart from the last episode though, I'd say give this one a miss if you're looking for fun.
The Dominators - Episode Two

Likes
- Ooh, I like that the Dominators have a wall that can slide down and become a medical bay. That's nice. At least they have the equipment to actually pull off the looking at alien genetic makeup.
- I can't remember if he dies or not, but I sure hope not. I am loving Cully in this, just so much. Sass your way through life, my dude.
- Jamie agreeing to act stupid, when the Doctor told him to and saying that acting that way is easy. I love these two and the way they act around each other. Jamie's face after he had said it would be easy XD
- The fun of the Doctor and Jamie pretending to be Dulcians and bumbling their way around everything. But I especially liked the part with the gun. The Doctor used what little he knows of the Dulcians from this time period to use it against the Dominator. Nice.
- Zoe complaining about how the female uniform on Dulkis is impractical and doesn't feel right on her. I am just imagining what would happen if she was Polly instead. She loved playing with clothes and dressing up. Zoe prefers full body suits and practicality. Nice.
Dislikes
- Uh, maybe not mention very loudly that the Quarks need to save their power. It's like giving away your secrets to enemies who will use it against you.
- ...What kind of plan is this? "Oh yes, we nuked the site, the radiation's all gone now even though the area is still pretty much dead, let's make this shit site a holiday spot. People will love the nothingness going on of this historical event."
- Umm, the Dulcians are supposed to be an advanced race, yes? Why do they seem anything but?
- Did that Dominator at the end (I can never remember their names...) have the order to blow up and destroy the research station? I thought he was told to investigate not destroy. He's a bit more bloodthirsty than the leader.
Awesome
- Oooooh, my god, the props in this are so utterly silly and ridiculous I can't help but love them. Look at the silly as scanner glasses the Dominators use. Just...look at them.
- Look at that sideways view of the capsule. From that angle, they look like miniature rockets and nice to look at. Front view they look more like bullets with feathering on the sides. Like the Dulcians merged together arrows and bullets.
Shitty
- Don't really like the Quarks too much. They just seem....harmless, for a lack of a better word. They don't come across as intimidating. This may be a thing though about age and how I wasn't around in the 60's to watch this in real time. Maybe back then it was different? All my older whovians out there who were kids in the 60's, do you remember?
- Ooh, shadow of a boom mic got in there! Several times! Haven't seen that in a while XD
- This is likely to be on all of them, because just gyeh. Those shoulders on the Dominators. They go all around the back too. Those things must have been so horrible to wear.
In Conclusion
Not as boring as last episode, but not all that great either in places. Like that council meeting. What exactly was the point of that, except to see how annoying a bunch of people all in a room together can get while trying to talk over each other. Still, this one had a bit of fun in it, so I am happy with that.
The Doctor and Jamie shine in this, so much. Just pretending to be completely ignorant of everything. Zoe and Cully are also great to watch. Those two bounce off each other nicely. I also liked, as was up in my likes list, Zoe complaining of how impractical the clothes there are. Zoe, look, it could be worse. You could be wearing the Dominator outfit.
I also like Keel and Kando beginning to think and question things.
Much better than last episode but still on the meh side of the scale for Doctor Who episodes.
Body count - 0. No one but Zoe and Cully were in the station when it got blown up, and they were both very much alive in the last frame as the credits began to roll. Everyone else was definitely alive last we saw them.
The Wheel in Space - Episode Six

Likes
- This will go in awesome too, but that whole scene at the start with Jamie and Zoe and the blasting of the meteors. They just couldn't hold on to each other and got separated.
- Wow, I do like that upon hearing of Gemma's death almost everyone got up out of their seats at the news. Shows how much she must have been loved that everyone was shocked out of their seats at hearing she was dead.
- The Doctor using the air vents to get around all sneaky like. Haha, yes, I like that.
- The Doctor finding the mercury for the fluid link. And immediately just pilfering it.
- Jamie and it taking a few seconds to click about what the Doctor meant when he said he had some company. Also, how damn happy the Doctor was to see him alive and well.
- *gasp!* My shippy dreams have come true! Look at Tanya just getting her hands all over Leo as he works that radio and is Captain for the rest of the mission. Yes, girl, get the man you want.
- The Doctor trying to scare Zoe into her decision into staying or going. Pfff, of course she's going to stay. No one left on board the Wheel actually takes her as anything other than an encyclopaedia on legs. Why bother staying there?
Dislikes
- Wait...why did the Doctor ask where Jarvis was? I am pretty sure last episode they had him holed up in his room. Or did they have him just sitting in his command chair and it just sounded like he was holed up in his room recuperating from his space sickness? Ah, the downside of recons...
- We don't see Jamie and Zoe get to the ship, even if separately. One minute they are separated and you're worried about them, the next BOOM, oh they're fine and having a drink on the rocket. No problems here.
- Umm, didn't the Cyberman who killed Gemma HEAR her say that the whole plot was to poison the air supply? Is that the Cyberman wandering the ship and had just killed Jarvis? Can these Cybermen not talk to each other when in different rooms? Guys, you're in the future. You could use, I dunno, walkie talkies even.
Awesome
- That whole scene at the start with Zoe and Jamie in the space suits trying to stay together but not being able to. Love those suits and love the FX there too.
- I think I have said it for most of the episodes, if not just this half I have just done, but I love the sound effects in this one.
- Ooh, blueprints. Shiny.
Shitty
- XD Sorry, it's awesome in its shittiness, and I had no idea where to put this, but I decided here, because ohhhh my god, I cannot take those Cybermen seriously at all when they are moving towards the Wheel and flapping their arms about like that. It looked so silly I spent the entire scene which is supposed to be tense laughing.
In Conclusion
And the conclusion is there and is able to be watched in its full glory.
I do like that one of the two episodes that wasn't lost was the last one. Also, look! A Dalek in this season.
This was oddly, not my favourite episode of this serial. It's probably one of my less favourites, even though I had to remind myself to come and write stuff down while watching. I have no idea why? I think it is because most of the actual action was the episode before this one and we jut got the aftermath. Also, for the most part, people were just stuck in rooms on opposite sides of force fields.
I still highly enjoyed this episode, don't get me wrong. I think I enjoyed every episode of this one, even with most of it recons.
Body count - 2 plus the Cyberman ship going boom. Welp, Jarvis is dead by his own stupidity (also by Cyberman.) 1 Cyberman killed by the Doctor. 1 Genocide of the Cyberman ship. Yes, I am including that as a genocide since the ship was a big one with an entire invading force we only saw a fraction of.
The Wheel In Space as a Whole
Highly enjoyable story. Highly enjoyable characters. We get the introduction to the new companion and her coming on board at the end.
We get a little background flirting and romance, we get awesome women being awesome. We get more Cybermen if that's your deal. We get a nice place for them to be. The Wheel is full of interesting people who are all different.
Seriously, don't miss this one. It was great and I highly recommend even if you can't watch the recons to watch the two surviving episodes and to listen to the audio of the other 4. Because this one is awesome.
