Schlatt sighed as he threw the week old pieces of sushi in the trash, he ran a hand through his hair as he checked his phone anxiously once again. You'd be here soon, and before he went spiraling down even more than he was, he knew he had to clean a bit. His apartment was messy, the living room had empty pizza boxes and was litered in chip bags and who knows day old pop. His room had clothes everywhere and a bed that had been unmade for nearly two weeks. His gaming room had empty water bottles and cereal boxes scattered on the floor or on his desk. He was a mess to say the least.
His mental health had been detariating for days now. Hell, even weeks. His mind constantly telling him how he didn't deserve anything he had, how he would be better if he cut off everyone. So he did. For weeks now he had been ignoring Mizkif, Connor and now he only had you left. Everyone else told him that he could go to them if he needed. That they'd take him back with open arms and that they were sorry for anything he's going through but that they were there. You of course took noticed at your boyfriends empty eyes and smile. How he became less and less productive. Only ever getting out of bed when you would let him know you were going over. You tried getting him out and about. Offering walks, hanging out with friends and anything else you think would cheer him up, and slowly he began saying no, that he was too 'busy' editing or too busy doing something else. So when he called you and asked you to come over after a week or so of not seeing him you immediately let him know you were on your way, telling him you'd text him when you were outside.
A part of him was telling himself to not do it. It's not what he wanted, he didn't want to leave you. He wanted you to be there with him in his little bubble and he never wanted to let you go. Unfortunately, the thought of letting you go and grow was much more powerful. He wanted you to be happy. He wanted to see you grow, even if that meant without him. So this was the day he would do that. The day he would let you go. He finished cleaning quickly, opting to just throw everything in a trash bag and hoping he doesn't throw anything of importance away.
Just as his phone dinged with the discord notification from you he finished shoving the two big trash bags under his sink too throwout whenever he had the motivation too. Knowing it would be a while he sprayed febreze and hoped for the best, quickly walking to his door he opened it seeing you. You looked up at him with a shocked expression -that being quite honest he knew he wouldn't have caught if he wasn't making sure he remembered every little part of this time you two had left together- your face changed quickly to a small smile and soft eyes. He opened the door a bit wider offering you to walk in. You stepped inside and walked towards his couch and sat. He sat next to you, wiping his palms on his basketball shorts.
"I uh- I need to talk you." He sighed. You nodded looking at him, letting him continue. Your eyes blinked away from his, knowing what was going to happen, your throat began to get tight as his voice quivered slightly. "I don't think we should be together. I'm not good for you anymore. I think you should find someone better. Someone who can be one hundred percent for you all of the time." You shook your head, wiping away a tear as you turned your whole body towards him.
"Don't do this J." You begged reaching to grab his hands. He let you as he continued. "These past years have been great with you. I truly couldn't have asked for anyone better to spend the past, what? decade, with. You've been my best friend for as long as I can remember and my partner for almost three years now. I do love you Y/n. I hope you know I'm doing this for you." You watched him as he removed his hands from you, looking up to meet your eyes. You wanted to fight him. Tell him he couldn't do this but you knew you would only push him away more.
"I'm always here for you J. Please call me when you're out of this rut. I love you." He gave you a fake soft smile as you both walked to the front door. His heart sunk as he closed the door once you left. He paced the hallway, turning around he caught a glance of himself in his mirror that sat right by his coat rack. His eye bags dark and sunken, cheeks thinner, and hair messy. He glanced at the photo at the corner of the mirror, seeing a picture of you and him. Him giving you a kiss on the cheek as you smiled in his hoodie and his Yankee's hat. Grabbing the photo softly, his thumb went over you. Missing you more and more already. He walked back to his front door. His fist placed against the door as his knees gave out, making him slide down the door, gripping the picture. "I'm sorry Y/n." He whispered.
If only you were there with him. Little did he know you were, your back against the door as well as the gloomy New York sky became dark and cloudy. If someone could see both sides of the door, they'd feel sad looking at the two lovers wishing the other would come back, not knowing their other half was just one wood piece away.
