Intro
Dwight brings Gretta to the animal shelter he volunteers at
She is looking for something that she can put in the moat
She says “hello” to a parrot and is freaked out when it repeats it back to her
Dwight gushing over the animals
Hands Gretta a cat
She looks uncertain what to make of it
Shelter director comes up to see them
Dwight says she’s looking for “the perfect animal to fill that hole in her heart”
Gretta adds “Something ferocious and terrifying.”
It makes things awkward, and Dwight laughs nervously before pulling Gretta away
She explains once again that she wants things to live in the moat
Dwight tries to explain the purpose of an animal shelter, but Gretta doesn’t really get it
“To get animals off the street, for one.”
“That is a feat that could easily be accomplished by making a very large stew.”
He takes the cat she’s holding away from her
Dwight refers to the animal shelter as “his happy place”
Shelter director brings out the white puppy seen in the earlier scene
Dwight and shelter staff look at him and go “aww.”
Gretta looks at him and starts screaming, backing up and running out of the emergency exit
Switches to Baldric and Gretta’s house, where they are keeping watch
Gretta bemoans that she left Dwight behind
Dwight shows up and they’re surprised he isn’t dead
Notice the puppy right behind him and freak out
Dwight picks up the puppy and introduces him as “Peanut”
Baldric tries to cast a spell (presumably to get rid of Peanut) but due to his staff breaking earlier on it doesn’t work
Baldric and Gretta inform him “That is no peanut, Sir Dwight. ‘Tis a varger.”
They accompany Dwight to the pet store with a bow and spear pointed at Peanut
A varger devoured Gretta’s great uncle Grimbald and developed a lust for human flesh that caused it to hunt her family for three generations.
Baldric once saw a varger devour four men in one day
Takes the shape of a cute puppy to lure fools to their deaths
Dwight still isn’t convinced
At the pet store—“Pet Spawt”
Baldric: “Hail, gamekeeper! We require creatures of—” *flicks gold coin onto counter* “—defense.”
Dwight clarifies it’s for a water feature
As he goes to search for puppy supplies, Gretta follows and continues to try to convince him about the threat of a varger
Pet store worker helps baldric decide to get koi. He is very pleased with the purchase
Gretta goes with Dwight to the dog park to keep an eye on Peanut in case he tries to devour Dwight
While there she starts talking with a woman who clearly thinks she’s talking about the dog but she’s referring to Dwight the whole time.
“I’m with the pig-headed one.”
“He has no idea what he’s playing with.”
“Indeed we do not (love them for their brains).”
“Is he a rescue?” *snorts* “Hardly the rescue I imagined, but fate has a wicked sense of humor.”
Baldric is trying to feed raw meet to his koi
Baldric and Gretta watch as Dwight keeps Peanut in a cage in his front yard
A potential family comes by to see about adopting Peanut and Gretta freaks out because “Not the Child!”
Cuts to that night, Gretta practicing fighting a dog-shaped dummy
Dwight comes up asking if she’s seen Peanut
Gretta immediately goes into battle mode
Lights go out
Peanut managed to get in. Comes down the stairs in puppy form.
“It… got past the koi.”
Dwight tries to approach it, and is stopped by Gretta.
Peanut transforms into its varger form
All scream and run outside
Baldric stays behind to “keep it at bay” and ends up falling backward into a pile of leaves
Dwight and Gretta escape to the woods and the varger follows them
Dwight apologizes for not believing Gretta
Encounter Peanut. Dwight realizes with how easy he had been to train that he could use that.
Gets him to sit
Uses fire extinguisher (the weapon Dwight brought) to make it fetch
Fire extinguisher explodes and they race back to the house
Now Dwight is ready to go full-on battle mode
A pack of vargers comes and brings the one varger home
Baldric emerges from the pile of leaves
Next morning, hear banging from the shed
Chlodwig emerges from the bike shed. Gretta is letting him live there because he is her cousin.
