It’s really hard to write a good series finale. When you’ve devoted time and energy into a show, you want it to have a satisfactory ending. Some shows have had terrible endings (How I Met Your Mother, LOST, Game of Thrones, etc.) while other shows have had great endings (Glee, New Girl, Avatar the Last Airbender, etc.). But Epitaph Two is the only show I can think of where the finale is by far my favorite episode of the entire series. While I enjoyed most of this show, it felt disjointed. The first season was a mess of one-off episodes that mostly missed the mark. The second season was major arc episode after major arc episode. Whedon had a chance to tell what should have been multiple seasons worth of a story in a singular season and he made every second count. Which brings us to the finale. The entire show takes place in the present, first showing us how the Dollhouse operates and then showing us how it effects the rest of the world. The finale catapults us into a dystopian future where the Dollhouse has ended society and wrecked the planet. You can tell there was a planned trajectory of how we got from the present day to this future, but the missing pieces are glossed over. The characters, the relationships, and the plot are much more gripping in the finale then they ever were during the present day. The scenes in this finale are emotional, intense, and gripping. The acting is so much better. It’s like the finale is it’s own self-contained story and it is so good! It just shows how great the show would have become had it been given the chance to get to the finish line. Dollhouse as a whole was an okay show, but this finale alone takes it to another level.
