Virginia house members will be deciding to amend a bill to provide transgender and gender nonconforming people the right to nondiscriminatory health care. (Yeah, I know. How is this already not a thing?) They are attempting to amend an already existing bill, and this amendment could truly benefit how the transgender community is depicted and treated medically.
This bill carries a clear definition of what it means to be transgender, as well as including their right to be treated by their gender identity, not their assigned gender. This is groundbreaking stuff because it creates an understanding that is not bipartisan.
This is not a “political” issue, this is a HUMAN issue. People are becoming sicker because they are not receiving the necessary care, the correct treatment because their physicians do not know how to treat transgender people, or they are flat out being TURNED AWAY.
Thousands of Virginians could benefit dramatically from the passing of this bill. They would finally be able to be provided comprehensible care without the fear of discrimination or violence.
Without this bill, Virginia will still be for lovers, but only if you’re binary.
