Had a group riding lesson this morning with one other girl and the new trainer today – it went rather well and I got a little confident in how Riley and I are going to be doing. She said his little hops are just him fussing and that I should just push him which is what I have been doing so that’s good. She made me lower my stirrups by about 3 holes which was VERY uncomfortable but I got used to it. I’m using my mom’s old dressage saddle and I knew I was supposed to ride with my stirrups long in a dressage saddle but I kept them short because I’m used to riding in my old trainer’s jump saddles. So yea. New experience for me.
These were her comments:
- I have soft hands (I’m usually told the opposite so this was a surprise)
- My left leg is my bad leg and I need to stop pushing my heel up and my toes out
- Need to stop pushing my left hip forward
- A good exercise for getting straight is to do a big circle to a small circle at a sitting trot with no stirrups. It builds Riley’s core and helps me feel where my weight is.
This trainer is very theoretical, talks a lot about tuning into his thoughts and stuff, which I kind of like but is very different for me.
She said two things I don’t agree with. She said that everyone should ask for the canter with their outside leg not their inside, whereas when I rode at a hunter barn when I was younger it was the outside, but my last year and a half at an eventing barn it was the inside. I think you can do each way but she was very adamant that there is only one way. She also said that when a horse trips, or knocks a rail, the only way they’ll know that that’s not what you want is if you get after them for it. I don’t think that’s true, especially when the rail or trip is a result of your riding. But ya’know.
Overall, I like her, and I’m excited to see where Riley and I go this summer.
