i think we all have to agree that one of the most unrealistic things about the vast majority of YA novels is that there is little to no swearing from any of the characters

#it kind of annoys me actually #bc when some characters are in a really serious situation and they're still saying things like 'crap'?#er no #and i suppose (on the writer's behalf)#it idealises the way teenagers speak that doesn't really reflect reality #like ofc *the amount/frequency* of swearing differs from charcter to character (and actually #should say something about that character) but...there should be *some* cursing there #esp. given that most of the characters are frequently in situations w/o adult superiors who might rebuke them for bad language #ofc there are authors who do include swearing such as maggie s and michelle hodkin but #otherwise i can't really think of many
