I loved your post about Kamala Harris's pearls. Did you see that Barbara Lee wore Shirley Chisolm's pearls? They're not a flashy piece, but I think it's so beautiful to see these remarkable women in American politics building intergenerational connections even in this completely different model where of course such things aren't necessarily going to be passed down to family. In this case the pearls were given to her by Chisolm's goddaughter.
Yes, I loved that! Rep. Barbara Lee wrote on Twitter, “On this historic day, I’m wearing Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s pearls, given to me by her goddaughter, who said that her godmother “would not want it any other way.” Because of Shirley Chisholm, I am. Because of Shirley Chisholm, Vice President Harris is.”
All of the articles I saw used a different picture of Rep. Chisholm where she was wearing a double strand of pearls but I think the one in this picture is the correct necklace because the pearls in the double strand were larger than the ones worn by Rep. Lee. For everyone that doesn’t follow U.S. politics, Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress and she ran for president in 1972.
I also liked the ring worn by Amanda Gorman, the inaugural poet. The ring was made by Of Rare Origin and features coral, jade, chalcedony, and pearls set in 18 karat yellow gold vermeil. The caged bird is a reference to Maya Angelou who was the 1993 inaugural poet.
All in all there were some great and meaningful jewelry choices at the inauguration today.
