Wat u think of faking it ?
I personally enjoyed it. It’s a relief to watch something that isn’t so deep and convoluted. No demons, no murders, no curses, etc. It’s high school. It’s a lot of exaggeration, but I took that as a bit of parody. It has moments where they actually do stop and discuss things. The girls discuss how offensive and wrong it is to pretend to be gay just to gain popularity. One of the girls is just totally self absorbed and only thinks about herself and her popularity, but the other one isn’t. The other one just wants to support her friend, make her friend happy, and at the end of the episode it’s her who actually realizes that she might be gay after all. So, her story is totally realistic. Lesbians are expected to be totally stereotypical and even the out gay guy thinks that way. It’s like a discussion of ‘hey, this is really how people see lesbians, but it’s not like that at all.’
Personally, I think a hell of a lot of people freaked out over it being an offensive misrepresentation of LGBT youth. I saw all sorts of passionate arguments about why people should boycott the show. Yet NONE of those people doing the arguing had even bothered to watch the pre-release episode. It’s typical of how things are done these days…we see something on the internet or social media and we automatically believe it and get all agitated and offended by it and we want to fight against it, but WE ARE WRONG. All it takes is a moment to do some research first, to read or watch things first, and then (and only then) we should form our own opinion about things.
Go and look in the Faking It tags now. People’s comments were almost 98% in favor of the show. There were still some people who were like ‘I don’t know what to do…I think I should be offended but I’m not. Someone tell me what to think!’ If people can’t even decide what to think about the show after watching it, then how are they justified in hating the show based off of someone else’s opinion??
Anyway, as I said in a previous post…I enjoyed the episode and I will continue to watch it. I’m not a teen in high school, so I have a few more important life issues than being popular and getting invited to parties, but I’m all for watching a young woman work through her sexuality. I find it interesting and I’m sure as hell not gonna hate on a show that’s just trying to do something that gives representation to an underrepresented group. Had I watched something like this when I was in high school, maybe I would have questioned my own sexuality sooner and saved myself some stress!
