Chapter 3 (of 5) of my Eremite Alhaitham/Researcher Kaveh fic is up!
“That inscription above the doorway to the next room mentions them being most beloved.” Kaveh’s ears burned as he pushed the thought from his mind. “Usually the owner of the tomb includes references to their own strength and achievements, but there doesn’t appear to be any of that here. This is a dedication to someone.”
Studying the painted glyphs on the walls, the colors unevenly faded from sun exposure, Kaveh thought aloud, “I wonder why this one appears to be undisturbed compared to some of the others? There was certainly no effort to conceal the entrance. It seems strange to leave it so…vulnerable.”
“There’s something else I’d like to show you,” Alhaitham said, surprising Kaveh with the volunteered information. Guess that answered his previous question of whether or not he’d been here before. Crossing the chamber, ignoring the entrance to the short hall leading to the next room, Alhaitham paused in front of a statue of a goddess. Barely taller than either of them, the top of her horned headdress nearly touching the low ceiling, she engulfed the room with her presence from her place in the shadows. Positioned in the one corner of the room the light from the windows did not reach, her smoothly carved eyes followed Kaveh as he caught up to Alhaitham. Her hands rested on knees, palms down, and a slight indentation across her shins indicated the hem of her dress. She was exquisite, and Kaveh made a note to sketch her face on the way back. It might not contribute to his research, but the delicate precision with which her face had been sculpted deserved more than a single passing glance.
Alhaitham took another step to slide into the narrow space behind the statue, and the tile beneath his foot sank into the floor.
